Orienteering at Tilgate Park

Published on 19/11/18

Undaunted by a chilly wind, four members of the Claremont Fan Court School orienteering squad enjoyed navigating running through a beautifully sunlit forest at Tilgate Park at the weekend.

Running as a pair, Oliver M and Ellis A ran steadily on the Yellow course and, despite some confusion around the seventh control, did well to complete the course in 31:15 and claim 9th place. This is a very promising result for the two novices. Also on the Yellow course, Thomas F had an absolutely brilliant run to get round in just over 16 minutes, which would have put him comfortably in first place if only he had remembered to punch the start control. Sadly, his failure to do so meant that he was disqualified, but he has learned a valuable lesson while putting down a strong marker for the future.

Meanwhile, Jack P was the youngest competitor to tackle the much more challenging Green course. In a strong competitive adult field, he did extremely well to finish in 11th place in a time of 44:58. This bodes well for the South East Championships at the Devil’s Punchbowl on 25th November where he will be competing in his own age group.
