Surrey Schools and Youth Orienteering Festival

Published on 17/07/18

Ten pupils from the Prep School and six from the Senior School represented Claremont Fan Court School at the Surrey Schools and Youth Orienteering Festival at Esher Common on 3 July, in which the best four scores across four age classes counted for each school. There were two courses, a Yellow and an Orange, which were fair but challenging, and all the competitors did well to negotiate the thick undergrowth and tricky path network.

In the Year 5/6 class, the pair of Emily I and Lexi W and the trio of Jaime B, George L and Will T had reasonable runs on the Yellow course, coming 20th and 21st in 44:24 and 45:51 respectively, though quite a long way behind the winner’s time of 16:34, while the pair of Connal C and Josh P unfortunately lost track of their position several times and took nearly an hour and three quarters to complete the course. Three Year 6 pupils did very well on the longer Orange course, with Thomas F and Theo T coming 8th in 54:26 and Monty N 6th in 49:03. The Year 7 pair of Xavier G-S and Josh S rather overestimated their navigational skill when choosing to run the Orange and took nearly two hours, but Arjan D from Year 7 did rather better to finish 9th in 65:01. The best result though was that of Jack P from Year 8, who sped round to take first place on the Orange in the very fast time of 24:07, almost 5 minutes clear of his nearest rival.

Finally, Nathan J and Alex W running as a pair did extremely well to claim second place in the Year 9+ class in 29:29, thereby helping Claremont Fan Court to 3rd place in the competition, pipping Esher Scouts by one point, but a little way behind George Abbot in second place and St Andrews in first.
