Orienteering at Wisley Common

Published on 13/03/19

Despite a dismal weather forecast, conditions were actually quite warm and dry for the four members of the Claremont Fan Court School orienteering squad who lined up on Wisley Common on Saturday 9 March intent on moving up to second place in the SN Junior League.

Attempting his first solo Orange course, Ellis A had his second fastest run this season and completed the 3.3 km course in 48:45 to finish in 20th place. Thomas F moved up to run his first Light Green course and despite a couple of minor navigational hiccups got round for 25th place in 45:17 over 4.1 km. Also on Light Green and recording their fastest times to date, Robert G and Nathan J clocked 38:25 and 37:01 to finish in 16th and 12th places respectively. All in all it was a very sound squad performance, but unfortunately not quite enough to reach the hoped-for second place, and in fact not even enough to hang on to third. Tomlinscote School and Esher Scouts, fielding twice as many runners as Claremont, are now tied in second place on 43 points behind runaway leaders St Andrews. But the CFCS squad is only one point behind on 42, and as the season approaches its climax at Alice Holt on 6th April the squad is more determined than ever to close the gap and overtake them.
