School council

Developing democracy and leadership skills

Pupils at Claremont Fan Court School have the opportunity to influence the day to day running of the Senior School. They are elected by their own year group and chaired by the deputy head boy and girl and hold council meetings a number of times each term to share, prioritise and report progress on ideas.  The emphasis is on improving fellow pupils’ experience in school.

This gives an opportunity to develop leadership skills such as public speaking, chairing meetings and negotiation skills.  Members may also meet senior managers of the school and the estates and facilities staff in order to assess feasibility and progress new ideas. Pupils will also work closely with the PTA and support whole school fundraising events such as cake sales and the annual PTA plant sale. They also launch the annual Christmas hamper appeal in support of the Salvation Army.

Ideas may be big or small: recent initiatives include the installation of a number of attractive picnic benches and a bike shed in the grounds, the sourcing of a warm school coat and a refillable water bottle.

It is a beneficial and motivating experience for pupils to participate in the school council and see their ideas come to fruition.
