Orienteering at Holmbush Forest

Published on 25/06/18

Three members of the Claremont Fan Court School Orienteering Club took part in the South East Relay Championships at Holmbush Forest in Sussex, running in the colours of Mole Valley. Team allocation for this event is determined by the total age of all team members, and since the sum of the boys’ ages exceeded the limit for the Junior class, the club captain decided to disperse them among three different teams.

Nathan J was teamed with two much younger boys to form the ‘Molecules’ team in the Junior class. Running the Orange course, Nathan did well not to get lost but did not achieve the fast time he was hoping for, and his time of 48:45 for the second leg effectively consigned the team to last place.  Also running the Orange course in the Handicap class, Jack P and Alexander O were less cautious and displayed real commitment and pace. Running for ‘Black Velvet’, Jack’s second leg time of 23:27 helped his team to 5th place, which is an excellent result. Alex was quicker in 21:13, but his teammates could not quite match his speed and their ‘Holy Moly’ team came in 9th. Both boys’ performances caught the attention of the club captain, who will no doubt be looking for ways of deploying them effectively in forthcoming competitions.
