Senior School Orienteering

Orienteering at Newlands Corner, Wellington College and Chelwood Vachery

The Senior School orienteering squad have enjoyed plenty of challenges over the Christmas break at Newlands Corner and Wellington College, with a most recent visit to Chelwood Vachery on 13 January.

At the end of the Christmas term, four members of the orienteering squad braved a bitter and biting north wind to take part in the Guildford Orienteers’ ‘Christmas Combo’ at Newlands Corner. The two senior members of the squad had 115 metres of climb to contend with, but both made at least one unwise and costly route choice on Light Green. Robert G took 76:37 for the 4.2 km course, while Nathan J took 77:44, coming home in 26th and 27th places respectively. Ellis A displayed increasingly confident navigation on the Yellow course, finishing 4th in a very good 16:43, while on the Orange course Thomas F had an excellent run, covering 2.6 km with 70 m of climb in 19:69 to claim 2nd place.

The Southern Navigators SE League event at Wellington College was the final orienteering event of 2018 and in a tough and experienced field, Thomas F did well to come 12th on the Orange course in 56:08.

At Chelwood in the Ashdown Forest, conditions were relatively firm and dry for January. The terrain was rough and hard to run through, with large areas of dense bracken, gorse and tussocky marsh grass. As befits a major SE League event, the level of competition was stiff, but the two boys acquitted themselves well, with Nathan J coming 6th on the Light Green course in 55:08 and rising star Thomas F 5th on the Orange course in 33:45. This bodes well for the upcoming Junior League event at Merrist Wood.
