Orienteering at Merrist Wood

The wooded grounds of Merrist Wood College were the venue for the first Junior League event of 2019, where last weekend four members of the Claremont Fan Court School orienteering squad attempted to improve the team’s standing in the league. They met with varying fortunes.
Bravely tackling his first ever Orange course, Ellis A found the navigation very challenging and struggled to maintain contact with the map. He never gave up, though, and despite a couple of long detours still managed to complete the 3 km course in 94:00 to reach 19th place. Also on the Orange course, Thomas F got round in 53:28, but after flying round the first half in a very fast time found the last section of the course zigzagging around the college buildings really confusing and ended up disqualified for missing the 17th control.
The two senior boys fared rather better, both having by far their best runs of the season. On the 4.2 km Light Green course, Robert G navigated accurately and kept up a steady pace to claim 13th place in 48:20, while Nathan J ran absolutely brilliantly and finished an excellent 2nd out of 36 in 37:49, only seconds behind the winner.
