Year 9 pupil, Flynn B, travelled to Northern Italy with the AFC Wimbledon U15s for the Gallini World Cup during the Easter holidays. This is one of the most prestigious youth football tournaments in Italy and was attended by more than 60 teams.
The U15s competition consisted of 32 teams from Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Israel, USA, Brazil, United Kingdom, Slovenia, Poland and South Africa. The town of Pordenone becomes a little "Olympic Village" during the tournament using 19 stadiums, 42 hotels and more than 8,000 kg of fresh Italian pasta!
After finishing 2nd in the group stages, the team went on to the last 16 beating SPAL Ferrara (3-2), Liventina (1-0) in the quarter final before finally beating Venezia FC in the semi finals on penalties.
The finals were held at Stadio Bottecchia where Wimbledon were up against NK Brinije Grosuplje from Slovenia - the only team they had already lost to in the group stages. After a nerve wracking full time score of 0-0, and no goals in extra time, Wimbledon again won on penalties 4-1 making them the U15 Gallini World Cup Champions 2019.
