Surrey Schools' Youth Orienteering Festival

Published on 28/06/19

Following the Senior School house orienteering competition, which was held two weeks ago and won decisively by Radnor, a team of pupils from both the Senior School and the Prep School travelled to Newlands Corner this week to compete against six other schools and youth groups in the annual Surrey Schools' and Youth Orienteering Festival.

Most of the team had little experience of orienteering outside school, and ran in pairs on the 1.4 km yellow course. The best results from Year 6 pupils Ellis B and Ethan M, who finished 6th out of 32 in a time of 14:15, and Ellis A and Jenson L who were 9th in 14:52. For the Senior School, Hannah B and Jemima M did well to come 5th in the Year 7 category.

On the 2.2 km orange course for Year 8 and Year 9 pupils, Thomas F and Jack J both struggled to find controls in the very dense undergrowth. Jack finished in 42:28, but was disqualified for missing five controls, while Thomas persevered to find all the controls but was disappointed by how long it took him. However, his time of 62:37 was still good enough to give him 5th place in Year 8. The most impressive result of the day was that of Jack P, who showed his experience and speed in completing the orange course in 21:18 for an excellent second place in Year 9.

The team finished in a very creditable 4th place overall behind St Edmunds Hindhead, George Abbot, and St Andrews Woking.
