Farley Heath Orienteering

Published on 29/01/20

Farley Heath, a lovely wooded area just south-west of Guildford, is one of the best orienteering areas in Surrey. On Sunday 26 January, it was the venue for the South East Middle Distance Championships. ‘Fairly Far Farley’, so named because it was neither a short nor a long distance event, attracted well over four hundred competitors, amongst whom were three members of the Claremont Fan Court School Orienteering Club. The nicely varied terrain included runnable woodland, dense conifer plantations and open areas with intricate contour detail largely hidden by bracken providing interesting but demanding challenges for all the runners.

On the 2.7 km light green course, Thomas F struggled to maintain contact with the map in the middle part of the course and took 85:26 for 7th place, while Nathan J didn’t quite manage to continue his recent run of good form on the 4 km green course and finished 90th in 77:26. On the 2 km Yellow course, however, Jack J navigated carefully and steadily to claim 6th place in 37:40, his second best result this season. Well done!
