U16A v St James

A good afternoon against a strong Hampton team in the first match of the season. The team showed great energy and determination throughout the match and worked well as a team to win the ball back in defence to start attacks. Well done!

Lacrosse

1st v GHS

Despite an even first half, Claremont fell to a 6–10 defeat against GHS on Saturday in a match that never quite caught fire for the home team. There were moments of progress, but this did appear to be the same team that functioned so fluidly the previous weekend. Illness and fatigue clearly played a part, but the squad still showed enough spirit to suggest that with recovery and renewed zest they can bounce back strongly next week.

U18C v GHS

The 3s demonstrated some great teamwork in transition and definite areas of improvement in defence, including our 1v1 and first slide. Unfortunately, GHS’ stickwork proved too strong and enabled more shot opportunities on goal. Opposition MVPs went to Tilly L. and Matilda S-B. Coach MVPs were Leah L., Millie J. and Tilly L. Well done to all who played!

U15B v GHS

The 15Bs put up a strong fight in the first half and were in the match going into half time 7–5 down. Unfortunately, GHS went on a goal run immediately into the second half which made it difficult to claw ourselves back into the game. Opposition MVPs went to Mona and Jess. Coach’s MVPs went to Holly and Jess.

Rugby

1st XV v Tiffin

The 1st XV played away to local school Tiffin. The tone of the match was set within the first minutes, with Billy smashing their key ball carriers. The physicality of the team was clear. Conal slipped down the touchline to open the scoring. The game was back and forth for the whole first half before a Claremont penalty made the score 8–0.

A massive reset team talk focusing the boys saw one of the best tries a first team has scored. From the kick-off, Josh H ran past most of the Tiffin defenders to put Ethan G away to score under the posts. This killed off the hope of the home side and, although they scored a couple of later tries, Claremont ended the game with another win. Player of the match went to Billy for countless massive tackles.

U16 v St James

A challenging afternoon for our U16 squad, hampered by eleventh-hour withdrawals. Claremont were caught cold at the start, conceding three early scores, before the pack began to offer a more robust direct approach. Will M and Alex T carried hard, with notable support from Hugo and Rafferty, as Claremont found a way back into the game.

Claremont scored twice through Alfie and Alex; at one point the scoreline was just four tries to two. But, with fourteen players throughout, fatigue set in as St James brought back their better players and stretched the victory margin. Those that played should be mostly proud of their efforts, Alfie leading the way as player of the match. A tough day, made all the more frustrating by the self-inflicted limitations placed on the travelling squad.

U15A v Grey Court

A convincing 33–0 victory for the U15A squad, playing on the school 1st team pitch under the watchful gaze of the Mansion and a sizeable crowd of parents, saw the unbeaten streak for this promising team continue. Tries from Max, Lucas R. (2), Charlie and Ed were complemented by four successful Eden conversions.

Ed and Giles carried hard into the opposition, with Max showing a coruscating turn of speed to power through and open the scoring. Charlie scored wide left to complete some excellent handling, before Lucas dummied through to extend the lead. Ed barged over to continue the progression, but Grey Court proved more obdurate in the second half. A poachers’ interception from Lucas completed the scoring in an entertaining, if disjointed, game. Claremont was guilty of poor ball retention and presentation at times, and of losing shape and structure as individuals broke through. All in all, a very decent win, however, with Hector nominated player of the match for his relentless tackling and work ethic.

U15A v Graveney – Continental Schools Vase R1

Claremont opened their Cup run with a 24–5 victory over a game if limited Graveney side. Played up in Earlsfield, the team again frustrated themselves by too much individualism, preferring to carry the ball into traffic rather than straighten and pass to a better-placed teammate. As the season progresses, this potentially excellent squad will need to employ a more structured approach: go through the process, recycle, and earn the right to go wide.

Tries from Max, opening the scoring in successive matches, Ed C., dynamic and powerful all afternoon, and Charlie, the ball worked well into acres of space on the left, earned a fairly secure lead. Though with some open interpretation at the ruck, and a refusal to lie down, Graveney battled back to score a try of their own. A late surge from Lucas pulled Claremont to a more comfortable victory. Once again, profligacy and individual overeagerness were costly, the team still finding their range in this early part of the term. Round two of the cup is in early October, as we host Rutlish in a home tie at CFC.

U13A v Grey Court

CFC U13A faced a strong Grey Court side and, despite a 50–5 defeat, showed encouraging signs of development. The team remained well-structured and organised throughout, with excellent support play and moments of individual brilliance. Jimmy and Joshua tackled with real commitment, while Jimmy’s distribution kept the attack moving. Charlie and Will carried powerfully, fighting for every yard. However, tackling overall needs improvement—too often it was static, high, and lacked strength. The team also struggled to retain possession, rarely managing more than two or three phases. With continued focus on ball retention and defensive technique, there is plenty of promise for future fixtures.

U12A v Grey Court

U12A showed some good progress in Saturday’s game. The boys were outmuscled in the contact zone, handing Grey Court the majority of possession in the game. There were flashes of brilliance. George sold a lovely dummy pass for a try. James rampaged down the middle of the pitch. Olly M. consistently proves difficult to take down. Well done all; we will train hard this week and be ready for the next one.
