Lacrosse

Senior at Surrey Counties

For the first time ever, we entered four teams into the Senior County Tournament, and it was an incredible day of lacrosse.

The First Team had some tough games but played consistently throughout the day. Coming 2nd in their group, they faced St Cat’s again in the final. With a nail-biting overtime golden goal, they secured their first County Tournament victory since 1993 – a truly historic moment!

The Second Team were absolutely solid all day. From 6–1 wins against St Cat’s and topping their group, to winning 2–0 in the final against a strong Putney side, they played with confidence and control, becoming County champions for the first time ever!

The Third Team had a fantastic day, topping their group, which saw them reach the Bowl semi-final. They narrowly lost this match, finishing 3rd in the Bowl competition, and showcased fantastic skill and determination throughout the day.

The Fourth Team competed brilliantly all day against a mixture of 3rd and 4th teams, showing great spirit and resilience throughout. All players should be proud of their performances, and it was amazing to see how much they supported each other throughout the day – a true display of Claremont spirit!

U18C

The 3s started strong with some great team offence and quick ball movement. Caterham stayed in it with several fast break goals, however, and the score was 5–5 going into half time. Caterham came out strong in the second half and, whilst Claremont managed to claw the scoreline back again, the final score was 11–9 to Caterham. Player’s Player(s): Alexa & Tilly. Coach’s Player: Mili for some fantastic draw work and defensive 1v1.

U15A v Caterham

The U15A team put into practice what we had been doing in training that week, and it was very successful. They are making significant progress every week and again benefitted from some fantastic saves from Farris H.

U15B v Caterham

The 15Bs started effectively, going 5–1 up in the first half. There were some great transition moments with good decision making to move the ball up the field. The second half saw a lapse in communication and tired legs, which enabled Caterham to gain a foothold on the scoreboard. A last-minute save kept Claremont in the clear for a 7–6 win at full-time. Player’s Player(s): Lucia and Lola. Coach’s Player: Jess for selfless feeds and heads-up play alongside constantly offering in transition!

U14B v Caterham

A strong game from the outset from the 14Bs resulted in a 9–4 win. The mids worked hard to provide lots of attacking opportunities, with some great shots from Poppy. POM were Bella & Emilie.

U13C v Caterham

Despite two quick goals from Caterham, Claremont bounced back to a convincing 9–4 win. POM was Diana and Bea, who had a great first performance in goal.

U12C v Caterham

Well done to all involved!

U14A at Surrey Schools

The U14As had a very positive day at the Surrey Schools tournament. The players started with great spirit and faced some tough first games, but showed resilience to fight back. With a win against St Theresa’s, the pupils demonstrated great progression in their structure throughout the day. Well done to all involved!

Rugby

1st XV v Hampton

A depleted team travelled to Hampton School on a wonderful autumn morning. A new-look pack, due to the traditional university visits, looked to bounce back from the shock defeat the week before. Billy powered over in the early moments, but this was soon cancelled out by the organised Hampton team. It took a while for the strong runners from Claremont to make ground. Josh P and Johnny K battled hard and gave the Claremont backs space to attack. Fred W and Josh H scored some dazzling tries. Hampton came back in the second half and closed the gap. Late tries from Josh and Fred saw Claremont take a well-deserved win. Player of the match went to Tristan for a solid performance at fullback.

1st XV v Dulwich 3s

The final game of the first half of term saw Dulwich College, one of the biggest rugby schools, come to Claremont. The team knew it was key to start strong; however, Dulwich were relentless in their attack, which saw Claremont defend solidly for 20 minutes in their own 22m. Eventually, the visitors crashed over from a pick-and-go at No.8. A deep kick saw a misfield from Dulwich, allowing Ethan to gather and run over the posts. It was 7–7 at the break.

In the second half, Oscar R and Josh P in the pack started to carry the ball beyond the gain line as the Dulwich pack tired. Claremont rallied back through a well-constructed forwards move which saw Billy dive over. Winning the breakdowns enabled the backs to run, and a dazzling run from Josh H put Fred W in to open up a gap. Dulwich came back, but a long penalty kick from Tristan opened up a 10-point cushion and sealed the game. Player of the match went to Oscar R for power runs and rucking.

U16 v Wilsons

A comprehensive 7–50 defeat for the U16s against a large, if limited, Wilsons team. Claremont showed glimpses of promise, scoring a good try through Adam P, but for the most part were far too passive, waiting for attackers to run at them — a decent opposition full back in particular — rather than pressing into an offensive defence. The ruck was a mess, with too many balls uncontrolled, spewing out at all angles. Chester battled hard at scrum half, making more tackles than the rest of the team, with Noah scrambling brilliantly to prevent three breakaway tries. Hugo was the Claremont PoM, striving constantly in a losing cause. It is tough at the moment, the side searching for a first win, but this can only come from a collective desire; individuals cannot hold back the tide.

U15A v Ewell Castle

A terrific contest saw Claremont maintain their unbeaten record against a strong Ewell Castle side, themselves previously undefeated. With the scores all but level going into the final quarter, Claremont faced a formidable opposition — the test they needed — rallying to pull clear and run out eventual winners 39–19.
Foremost in the vanguard was an immense performance from PoM Ed C, a focal point for all the home side did well. Eden controlled proceedings well at stand-off, releasing a back line that was consistently challenged by two very strong Ewell centres. Lucas relished this personal duel, scoring two tries, with further scores from Charlie, all elbows and knees, a handful to tackle; one of his two tries was a well-worked team score, the ball fed wide left. Ed completed the try count as Eden, who kicked well all day, added four conversions and two penalties. Uncontested scrums, due to front row injuries, made for an exciting spectacle, the crowd enthralled as Claremont rose to the challenge and celebrated a hard-earned victory on a gorgeous morning at the school.

U14B v Ewell Castle

The U14Bs won a spirited game of rugby on Saturday. They started slowly and quickly fell behind 7–0 due to some sloppy ball handling and even sloppier defending. The boys quickly rolled their sleeves up and corrected their earlier mistakes with more aggressive tackling, rucking, and running with the ball in hand. Two tries in each half saw them end up as the well-deserved victors, despite a last-second score from Ewell Castle.

PoM was Tom G-S for his outstanding effort on both sides of the ball, capped by a long breakaway try for Claremont’s first score!

U13A v Ewell Castle

The U13A team produced one of their strongest overall performances of the term, despite a disappointing result against a well-drilled Ewell Castle side. The opening five minutes proved costly, with Claremont conceding a couple of soft tries through missed tackles and loose handling in contact. However, the team responded with determination and gradually grew into the game.

Fergus M and Jeffrey W set the tone defensively with some strong early tackles, while Barend A was aggressive and effective in the ruck. Charlie S impressed with his speed to the breakdown, ensuring quicker ball and stronger defensive cover. Eddie H grew in confidence as the match went on, making several ferocious tackles, and Charlie B made a real impact driving the ball forward and defending powerfully. The highlight of the match came when Alex B ran a perfect straight line before releasing a late, well-timed pass to Max C, who finished clinically for Claremont’s try. The forwards battled hard, showing flashes of superiority in the scrums and rucks, while the backs improved their organisation and began to run more directly. Although the scoreline didn’t go Claremont’s way, this was a committed and encouraging performance that reflected real progress in teamwork, resilience, and physicality.

U13B v Ewell Castle

The aim was to improve tackling and to work as a team in defence, and that’s exactly what the team did. Their confidence was given an immediate boost with a brilliant solo running try by Joe B, which made the boys believe they could take the game to Ewell. But Ewell hit back straight away, and it became clear they had some strong and powerful runners in their team. The boys then worked extremely hard to present a solid and unbroken defensive line, meaning that Ewell had no clear path to run through. Will P was particularly dogged, making good tackles and chasing hard to find the next opponent. The upshot was that tackling became easier, and when Ewell ran out of ideas, their passing produced mistakes that Claremont pounced on. First-half tries by no fewer than six different players showed how well the boys ran and linked to finish off all-round good play.

If the first half was good, the second half was outstanding. With the team constantly rotating, the boys adapted quickly and were positive in all aspects of their play. But the moment of the game came when Ewell had attacked to within 20m of the line and one of their strongest runners took off. He was met head-on by Eryk, who made a textbook tackle but did so with such force he knocked his opponent back five yards. Ewell, undaunted by this huge tackle, came again with their next-best runners. Eryk got up and did the same again. Finally, Ewell’s biggest, fastest and strongest runner, who up until now had caused real defensive issues, charged again. Eryk, for a third time in a minute, got up and tackled with such force he knocked his opponent back and broke the ball free. It was an amazing passage of play for one player, but the impact on the rest of the team was equally brilliant. Ewell did not come forward with purpose again, as all the boys started to make stronger tackles all over the field.

If Eryk’s tackle defined the game, the moment of the game may possibly have been Rory’s dummy and side-step at first receiver, sending four defenders the wrong way and allowing him to score almost unopposed under the posts. A very well-deserved win and one the boys should be very proud of.

U13A v St James

The U13A had an impressive 35–5 victory, stepping up standards in a strong team display. Solid in contact and retaining abundant possession, the platform was set for tries from Charlie B (2), Jimmy (3), Thiam and Will G. Alex B was PoM for his direct running and solid defensive work. This was a game the team might have lost a few weeks ago, and half term will be all the sweeter for this determined team performance.

U13B v St James

A dominant victory for the U13B against a game but limited St James, sent the team into half term on a nine-try high. Claremont tackled well for the most part and had too much pace and firepower out wide for the hosts to cope with.

Tries for Erik (3), Paolo (2), David (2), Baxter and Oscar were mostly scored through good passing, putting our speedy outside backs into space. Will P was PoM, carrying the ball well and constantly involved. Well done boys, we will face stiffer tests, but this was a good team performance.

U12A v Halliford/Hampton

One win, one loss for the U12A, who defeated Halliford in a scrappy game but lost to a more structured Hampton team. Some good rugby on show, but there are lessons to learn on retaining team shape and securing the ball at ruck time. A fun afternoon for these developing rugby players.

U12B v Halliford/Hampton

A fine performance from the U12B squad saw them defeat Halliford 5–2, then Hampton 2–0 in a fast and frantic three-way triangular. Led by captain and PoM William G, strong and direct up front, and namesake William S, who ran superbly on the wing all afternoon, Claremont also enjoyed an effervescent performance from Ethan, fearless in the tackle, as they hunted the ball and passed well to find space.

Tries from Ethan, Lawson, William S (2) and William G in the Halliford victory were followed by two from Charlie and William in the Hampton game. Two ten-minute halves in each game allowed for plenty of squad rotation, the boys listening well and, for the most part, putting this information into practice. Well done team, a really fun and competitive afternoon — these mini tournaments are so good for players of this age to experience different challenges.
