Athletics

On Saturday 14th June, a selection of Claremont pupils proudly represented NE Surrey at the Surrey Schools Athletics Championship at Kingsmeadow, Kingston, having been selected based on their personal bests at the time. The event brought together the top school athletes from across Surrey, all chasing the dream of becoming Surrey Schools champions and earning the chance to compete for the county in the Inter-Counties Championships next week in Crawley.

There were several notable Claremont performances on the day. Eden and Brodie placed 4th and 5th respectively in the Junior Boys’ hurdles. Thea, in her first major event, came 5th in the shot put. Archie found the Junior Boys’ 300m tough but achieved a personal best.

We are thrilled to announce that both Giles and Holly are the Surrey Schools Junior Boys’ and Junior Girls’ javelin champions for 2025. They each delivered dominant performances to claim their titles, and we wish them all the best for next weekend’s major national championship.

In more exciting news, Giles has just been selected for the English Schools squad and will go directly to the national final on the 13th and 14th July. Meanwhile, his sister, Pippa H, made it quite the weekend for the family by winning the South of England shot put title at Crystal Palace.

Cricket

1st XI

The U18A side lost to Reeds by 8 wickets, having scored 137 (Luca A 34, Tristan D 23, Will H 19). Reeds reached the target with just under five overs to spare. Despite tight bowling from Will H (1-20), Tristan D (1-16), and Tom A (1-18), the visitors finished on 139 for 2.

U15A v Cedars

A commanding performance from the U15A side saw them emerge from a well-spirited game with a comfortable win. Claremont opened the batting, and Will H and Sam C built a strong partnership from the outset. Will retired after reaching a half-century and was promptly replaced by Felix. Sam was just a few runs short of his own retirement when he was caught out, and Claremont posted what proved to be an unassailable total of 188.

Cedars played some good shots, but ultimately lost wickets too quickly to give their top-order batters a realistic chance of chasing down Claremont’s score. Four wickets were shared between the Cole brothers, and Leo S took two catches—one impressively from his own delivery—highlighting a solid bowling display from Claremont.

U15A Girls v KGS

The U15A girls were put in to bat against KGS and, after a difficult start with early wickets falling, managed to post a respectable 126 for 9. KGS secured the win in 11 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Maddie M was outstanding with the bat, scoring 19.

U14A v Cedars

After losing the toss, Claremont were put in to bat, with the two openers scoring at a blistering pace. Max hit an explosive 39 off 27 balls, including 26 runs in a single over! Ably supported by Charlie, who scored 43 off 25 balls, Claremont posted a competitive total of 129 all out.

Facing a Cedars side with some strong firepower in their batting line-up, Claremont bowled with impressive efficiency and discipline, delivering accurate full-length balls throughout. The standout bowler was Josh, who took 3 for 11 off his four overs, helping to secure victory with two overs to spare.

Player of the Match: Charlie (for his composed batting and two wickets)

U14A v KGS

A stunning summer’s day provided the backdrop to a compelling match that went right down to the wire, with Claremont’s last batter run out on the final ball—leaving the visitors just two runs short.

KGS were restricted to 111, thanks to some tight bowling and two dangerous batters holing out to full tosses. Harry S kept wicket superbly, while Giles, Max, Lucas, and Josh were among several different wicket-takers.

Claremont began the chase well, with Max and Charlie adding 34 in the first six overs. However, after their departure, the innings stalled, scoreboard pressure mounted, and the target began to feel further away. Giles appeared to shift the momentum dramatically, smashing five sixes as KGS’s gamble to bowl spin mid-innings backfired—several balls disappearing into the car park.

But following Giles’ dismissal, the innings faltered once more. Wickets fell steadily, setting up a dramatic finish. Harry and Micah came together as the final pair with the tension mounting: two runs needed from three balls, then two from two—but with no runs scored, Harry was run out attempting to steal a single that would have forced a super over.

KGS thoroughly deserved the win and celebrated a well-earned victory built on tenacious fielding. Claremont, despite a brave effort, were just unable to close the deal in what was a terrific match.

U14B v Cedars

The U14B travelled to Cedars with only 9 players, but after restricting the opposition to 72 runs, the team set out and chased down the score in 10 overs with impressive batting for a loss of only one wicket. There was some fantastic all-round bowling, especially from Rafferty G, taking 4 wickets, with great batting from Lucia P, scoring 11 not out, including a magnificent pull shot for 4.

U14B v KGS

The U14B played away at KGS and, after winning the toss, put the opposition into bat. The bowling was shared around, and after 16 overs, KGS were bowled out for a total of 64. Claremont batted really well and chased the score down within 8.5 overs. Jake W scored 30* (not out). Player of the game was Elliot G, with bowling figures of 3 overs, 4 wickets for 14 runs. He also scored a healthy 24* with the bat.

U13A v KGS

U13A played away at Kingston Grammar. After putting the opposition into bat, they bowled them out for 129. CFC’s batting was put under pressure with some very good bowling, and eventually they conceded the game on 70. A great performance came from vice-captain Sam B, taking 3 wickets off 4 overs for 19 runs.

U13B v Cedars

The U13B team won this one-sided game with ease, openers Dylan and Finn breezing past the low target within 7 overs, leading Claremont to a 10-wicket victory.

Claremont bowlers dominated a limited batting line-up, with Extras contributing 31 of the meagre Cedars’ 44 total. Wickets tumbled quickly, with a caught and bowled (Harry) and last batter run out (Milo) top-and-tailing a card with a remarkable eight wickets clean bowled. Cedars arrived with just nine players, so were invited to bring two batters back in, with two Claremont fielders offered during the hosts’ innings, but the scoreline underlines the visitors’ collective struggle.

Dylan (21) and Finn (12) eased Claremont to victory, despite some remarkably judicious umpiring from the home official (with wides and no-balls virtually ignored). Rupert captained the team well, with all eleven players given a chance with the ball, the resounding clatter of wickets a regular soundtrack on a beautiful, bright morning. Player of the Match was Dylan, as his match-winning 21* was followed by a remarkable 4 wickets for 2 runs.

U13B v KGS

The sweltering heat proved too much for the umpire’s iPad, which retired hurt due to the temperature, the match itself punctuated by drinks breaks as both teams basked in the sunshine. Claremont conceded a sizeable 165 to the KGS U14 boys, shoulders dropping as short as some of the bowling as the score mounted. The short boundary and quicksilver outfield kept the scoreboard rattling, KGS conceding 4 wickets in the total.

Claremont began the chase well, Dylan P blazing a glorious cover drive to the ropes before holing out. Opening partner Finn was the principal scorer, the visitors’ total rising along with the mercury, as an unlikely chase looked possible. Claremont could not sustain the run rate, however, despite some good batting from Rupert, eventually bowled out for 111—a credible effort against older boys on a sun-baked surface.

Postscript: The iPad convalesced well and will be making a full return to action…

U12A vs Cedars School

Claremont U12A fell agonisingly short in a nail-biting contest against Cedars School, losing by just 5 runs. Batting first, Cedars posted a competitive 119, with the Claremont bowlers keeping things tight throughout. Ethan S led the way with an excellent spell, finishing with figures of 1-8 from his 3 overs, showing great control and consistency.

In reply, Claremont put up a spirited chase, with contributions throughout the order. Angus T top-scored with 14, closely followed by Albie A (13) and Jimmy W (12), but the team ultimately finished on 114—just short of the target—as the match went down to the final delivery.

U12B v Cedars

The U12B team put in a commanding performance away at Cedars, securing a well-deserved 8-wicket victory after a strong all-round display. Cedars won the toss and elected to bat, but CFC’s bowlers and fielders quickly took control of the game. Rory T set the tone early with an outstanding caught and bowled to claim the first wicket. From there, the pressure continued to mount on the home side. The fielding was a highlight of the innings, with five run-outs—each involving a different fielder—demonstrating excellent awareness, teamwork, and athleticism.

Leo M was the standout bowler on the day, delivering two tight overs for just 4 runs and conceding no extras, showing great discipline and control. Cedars struggled to build momentum and finished on 83 for 9, with their captain top-scoring on just 12.

In reply, Claremont came out with intent, scoring 42 runs before the loss of the first wicket. The aggressive approach paid off, as the team chased down the target comfortably. Charlie S led the way with the bat, scoring a fluent 14 off just 9 balls to anchor the innings and guide the team to victory with 8 wickets in hand. It was an impressive team performance from Claremont, marked by sharp fielding, disciplined bowling, and confident batting.
