Staff, pupils, families, alumni and local residents came together this month to unveil a bespoke crocheted post box topper on Esher High Street, celebrating the town’s royal heritage and the strong community spirit at the heart of Claremont.

Now proudly displayed on the double post box outside Boots, the colourful installation was created as a gift from the Claremont community to the people of Esher. Inspired by the school’s historic home, Claremont mansion, the topper is designed to bring a smile to residents and visitors alike while celebrating the school’s longstanding connection with the local area.

What began as an idea within Claremont’s Crochet Club soon grew into a much larger community project. Over several months, pupils, alumni, parents, grandparents, a local resident, and members of the Art, Textiles and Design Technology departments contributed their time, creativity and craftsmanship to bring the display to life. The project became a wonderful example of collaboration across generations, with contributors of all ages working together towards a shared goal. As the topper took shape, it quickly became clear that it was about much more than crochet, reflecting the creativity, kindness and sense of community that define life at Claremont.

One of the most eye-catching features is the miniature Claremont mansion, created by the Design Technology department using the school’s 3D printers. Produced to scale, the model captures an impressive level of detail, from the distinctive chimney stacks on the roof to the tunnel beneath the mansion steps leading to the basement, now home to Claremont’s art and photography studios. The mansion quickly became a talking point around the school, with pupils and staff alike enjoying the opportunity to watch the design and printing process unfold and see the iconic building gradually come to life in miniature form. Visitors taking a closer look will also spot miniature figures dressed in Claremont school uniform, a familiar sight to many local residents and a tribute to the school’s enduring presence in Esher.

The school would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the project, with particular thanks to Claremont alumna Sophie and local resident Jo for their dedication and support throughout the many months of planning and creation. Claremont was also delighted to welcome Jeni from Experience Esher to the unveiling, helping to mark this special community achievement and celebrate the many people who played a part in bringing the project to life.

If you’re passing through Esher High Street, be sure to stop by and take a closer look at the topper and its many hidden details. The installation celebrates the town’s heritage, creativity and community spirit while showcasing the special bond between Claremont and the wider Esher community.

The topper is far more than a crochet display. It represents many hours of creativity, kindness and collaboration over several months from people across the Claremont community. We are delighted to share it as a gift to Esher and hope it brings joy to residents and visitors alike.
