Den building, discovery and imagination in a space of historic significance at Clarmeont’s junior school

Den building, discovery and imagination are thriving at Claremont Fan Court School in Esher, where pupils in Years 3 to 6 have launched a new lunchtime initiative transforming the historic walled garden into a creative outdoor play space.

Driven by the junior school council, the project has been shaped entirely by pupil voice, with children calling for more hands-on, outdoor and screen-free time. Their ideas have now come to life in a weekly lunchtime club, already a firm favourite on Thursdays and Fridays with over half of the pupils having joined in already.

Led by Assistant Head for Pupil Wellbeing and Welfare, Henry Vincent, pupils head into the garden ready to design, build and collaborate using natural materials. Creations include imaginative dens, themed spaces, a pretend pizza oven and communal areas where children gather, socialise and refine their designs.

We really believe in the value of children playing freely in nature. There’s something so special about seeing children work together, explore the outdoors, get active and let their imaginations lead the way. These moments build confidence, friendships and a genuine connection with the world around them. This isn’t about doing anything new or different – it’s about embracing a timeless way that children have always played and learned, and doing it with care and intention. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a lovely outdoor space, and we pour our hearts into making the most of it every day. We’re excited to keep growing these opportunities and seeing where children’s creativity takes them.

Set within one of the last remaining Vanbrugh hot-walled gardens in Britain, the space offers a unique blend of heritage and creativity. Pupils are also helping to shape the environment itself, building a natural hedge for wildlife habitats and adding handmade bird boxes from art club and decorated pebble displays from eco club.

Set within 100 acres of historic parkland, Claremont provides a remarkable backdrop for learning in nature. The school will also mark the 300th anniversary of architect Sir John Vanbrugh in 2026, whose influence forms part of its rich garden heritage.

More than den building, the initiative is building confidence, communication, creativity and collaboration, while giving pupils time to slow down, connect and create.

Claremont Fan Court School will open its doors for Heritage Open Day on Saturday 19 September 2026, from 10.00am to 5.00pm, in partnership with the National Trust’s Claremont Landscape Garden. For more information, email alumni@claremont.surrey.sch.uk.
