Beyond the ordinary: Co-curricular clubs that inspire, challenge and connect

Claremont’s junior school has developed a co-curricular and wraparound programme that is ambitious and distinctive, offering children a broad range of opportunities to explore, learn and grow. Purposeful and inclusive, it is designed to carefully connect classroom learning, pastoral care and family life.

With around seventy-five clubs each term, primarily at lunchtime and after school, pupils can explore a wide range of interests. Clubs are organised into six categories: sport, STEM, drama and music, creative arts, learn and improve, and world and culture, ensuring there is something to engage every child. This structure provides exceptional breadth while giving pupils the freedom to discover new passions in a supportive, encouraging environment. Every member of the teaching staff leads a club, bringing their own skills and passions to life, creating an authentic, vibrant experience that children respond to enthusiastically, while keeping most activities free for families. Over ten specialist visiting clubs also help children refine technique, develop confidence and achieve higher standards in sports, performing arts and technology.

The programme is refreshed each term, with new spring clubs including mindfulness, yoga, British Sign Language and go-kart club. Popular clubs use the school’s beautiful grounds, from eco warriors and gardening to a wide range of sports, many mixed-age, fostering community across year groups. Children gain early exposure to technologies, creative practices and collaborative skills vital in a rapidly changing world. Digital Explorers Club exemplifies Claremont’s future-focused approach, running as a golden thread through classroom learning. Pupils develop content creation, podcasting and video production skills, building confidence in communication, technology and teamwork. Weekly podcasts reinforce classroom learnings about character qualities and learner attributes, while supporting the wider community, for example, sharing experiences of moving to the senior school. This purposeful work fosters empathy, pupil voice and digital skills, preparing children for future learning and life beyond school.

Clubs at Claremont are more than an optional extra; they are an integral part of the curriculum and the school’s holistic approach to education. Many clubs focus on relaxation and socialisation, such as the daily after school Chill Club for our youngest pupils, offered free of charge. Others support academic development in engaging ways, like Language Detectives, while Prep and Chill Club, available from Year 3, provides a calm, supportive space for children to complete homework, helping make home time more relaxed and enjoyable for families.

The programme also delivers clear pastoral benefits. Playground incidents have decreased as pupils are active in clubs and build friendships beyond their immediate circles. Across the programme, children develop social skills, resilience, confidence and a sense of belonging. Alongside trips, residentials, sport, music, drama, service, charity and pupil voice, co-curricular activities contribute to character development, problem-solving and independence, encouraging children to embrace challenges while supporting the wellbeing of their community.

Combining breadth, expertise, pastoral care and innovation, Claremont’s co-curricular and wraparound programme is distinctive and future-focused, engaging and challenging pupils while equipping them with the skills, confidence and resilience to thrive now and beyond school.

A huge thank you for all your hard work running go-kart club! We think it was a fantastic opportunity to do something completely different and learn a bit of mechanics/engineering and they certainly all had a lot of fun racing your collective creation at the race meet. Sasha really loved racing it and found building it quite a challenge. Thank you for your care and attention and for the fun of the club itself.”
