Recently, the English department hosted the next round of the Poetry by Heart competition. This is a National Poetry Speaking Competition for schools and colleges in England. Every pupil in Year 7 recited a poem in their English lesson and from that, 24 pupils were selected to perform their poem in the second round of the competition. On the evening, pupils performed an ensemble piece for parents and then recited their poems in front of external adjudicator Sian Rowland, who chose three winning and four highly commended performances. The winners will now submit a recording to the ‘Poetry by Heart’ website for judging by a panel of top UK poets. Finalists in the National Championship, will then be invited to perform at a Poetry by Heart Finalists Celebration Event at Shakespeare’s Globe in London in July.
We wish our winners (Michela B, Abigail F, Chloe A) the best of luck for the next round! Well done to all pupils who participated and a special mention to our runners up Fred W, William H, Benjamin M and Josh H! Standards were extremely high and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event. A huge thank you to English department, especially Mrs Howes for her support of pupils with rehearsing their performances and organising the event.
