The weather gods had a change of heart across half-term, slate-grey replacing azure blue as the skies glowered and rumbled. Regrettably, cricket matches against Kings Witley were postponed on the first day back, a portent for the challenging week ahead. Sunshine emerged from the pavilion intermittently, permitting a couple of games to take place, but for the most part, regrettably, rain stopped play.
Having won a narrow victory in the first instalment of this fixture, tensions were high as Reeds looked to avenge their loss. The stakes were raised higher with this game being played as a normal T20 match and Reeds picking a more experienced team.
Reeds chose to bat first and straight away they found the going tough. Amerleigh and Lilly both bowled with pace and accuracy and quickly made inroads into the Reeds line-up. In fact, all the bowlers bowled with much more confidence and better line and length, making batting more challenging, but offering more opportunity for runs to be struck. In the end, a highlight was Eilidh’s attempted run-out. If only the bails had fallen off. Reeds finished with a solid 107 runs of their overs.
If this was initially daunting, Lily and Zara made light work of things. Zara’s first scoring shot crashed the ball through square leg for a boundary and that set the scene. The pair put on 50 in 8 overs with Lily being the leading light striking boundaries all around the ground. However, with Lily’s retirement the scoring rate slowed and wickets also fell regularly. With 2 overs to go, Claremont needed 12, but had only 3 wickets left; the game was very much in the balance. Runs were hard to come by and 2 wickets fell in that penultimate over including the crucial one of Amerleigh. The final over saw the last pair needing 8, and with the Reeds leading bowler delivering the ball straight and with pace, it became too tall a task.
The game may have been lost but the performance was a huge development on their last outing. Lily M was outstanding in all aspects of the game and should very definitely play more if the opportunity arises. Lily M was awarded Player of the Game.
The U15 girls faced off against Tiffins Girls in an impressive display of skill and teamwork. From the very start, the team dominated the match, securing another well-deserved league victory. This win places the girls at the top of their group-stage standings. A special shoutout to Anais P, Olivia B, Poppy M, and Yael M for their outstanding performances throughout the game. Well done to all the players for their hard work and dedication!
Sadly the Year 9&10 meet scheduled for Thursday 5th June fell victim to the incessant rain, or should that be the water jump?!
