·3 April 2025
On Monday, 5 May, members of the Claremont Archery team competed in the Greenwood Osterley St George’s Day Shoot. Max (Year 13) shot a Windsor round at 60, 50, and 40 yards, with three dozen arrows at each distance. Comet (Year 11), Rosie (Year 9), and Mrs Cox shot a Windsor 50 round (50, 40, and 30 yards), while LJ (Year 9) shot a Windsor 40 (40, 30, and 20 yards). Baxter (Year 7), taking part in his first competition, shot a Windsor 30 round (30, 20, and 10 yards).
All the students competed in the Barebow category (without a sight), while Mrs Cox shot in the Recurve category (with a sight). The weather was highly unpredictable, changing dramatically every 20 minutes, but the team adapted well to the conditions and performed excellently. Fellow archers praised the Claremont pupils for their positive attitude and sportsmanship, noting they were a joy to shoot with. In terms of results, Max, Rosie, LJ, and Baxter each secured first place in their respective categories, while Comet earned a strong second place.

Claremont’s U12 boys faced a strong group, competing against Whitgift, Trinity, Amesbury, and KGS. The day began with a fantastic start, securing victories against RGS and Trinity.
Next up was Whitgift, where Tommy and Alex battled hard for every point in a tight match, ultimately losing despite a determined effort. Still in high spirits, the boys then took on group leaders Amesbury. Though initially down 3-0, they mounted an incredible comeback to 3-2. With the match going down to sudden death at deuce, it came down to the final point, Claremont narrowly lost 4-2.
Despite the score, the quality of tennis on display was excellent, with some brilliant serves and rallies throughout. Huge congratulations to Tommy and Alex for a fantastic effort and impressive teamwork!
In what was arguably the toughest group, Ben and Charlie faced Riddlesdown Collegiate, St George’s Weybridge (the hosts), and Caterham.
They started strong with a 4-1 win over Caterham and followed it up with a dramatic 4-3 victory against St George’s, winning the final tie-break 7-5. Their last group match against Riddlesdown also went the distance—another 3-3 tie-break thriller, which they lost 8-6. This left Claremont second in their group.
Thanks to their high points tally, Ben and Charlie earned a “lucky loser” spot in the quarter-finals—a well-deserved opportunity they made the most of. They beat Harrodian 4-1 in the quarters and triumphed over Trinity 7-2 in yet another tie-break to reach the final.
In the final, they faced Riddlesdown again, and this time, they dominated, winning 4-0 in a superb display of skill, focus, and determination.
Congratulations to Ben and Charlie on winning the Surrey Festival once again as a pair! Outstanding tennis, brilliant teamwork, and thrilling performances from both Claremont pairs. Well done to all the boys for representing the school with such pride and resilience!
The U15 boys kicked off their Surrey Tennis League campaign with an away match against a strong KCS side. It was a challenging opening fixture, with KCS taking early control of the match and ultimately securing a 4-0 win.
Despite the result, William H, Chester HE, Leo B, and Nathaniel RT showed great determination, working hard throughout and constantly looking for opportunities to attack. The boys maintained a positive attitude and demonstrated commendable effort and sportsmanship on court.
This match provided valuable experience, and we’re confident the team will continue to grow stronger as the season progresses. Well done, boys, keep up the hard work!
The 13A boys had a nerve-wracking fixture on Tuesday, finishing their games 2-2 and taking the match to a deciding tie-break. With aggressive attacking play and some fantastically placed shots all around, the team pulled through with a dramatic win against Caterham. A superb first game of the season, full of grit, teamwork, and determination!
It was a hugely promising evening in the sunshine that began so well, but ultimately slipped away from us. The Howard batted first and, after just four overs, were already five wickets down with only a handful of runs on the board. Ella S, Holly R, and Emily R all bowled with accuracy and pace, putting us in a strong position early on.
However, from that point, we seemed to lose our way and focus, conceding 76 runs in extras and allowing The Howard to post a much higher total than we should have, finishing on 110.
Chasing on the school’s new wicket, this target was certainly within reach, and we got off to a strong start. But crucial wickets fell, and despite some excellent hitting from Jess L, we struggled to maintain the required run rate. Credit to The Howard, while their batting faltered, their bowling was much stronger, and in the end, it was the extras that made the difference. Our girls had to fight for every run and finished just 15 short. They showed plenty of potential for the many matches ahead.
On a sunny afternoon, the U12A side secured a solid 21-run victory over Wimbledon College. Batting first, the team posted a strong total of 141, led by a composed 41 from Ethan S. In response, Wimbledon College reached 120 from their 20 overs, with tight bowling and key wickets keeping them in check. Jimmy W impressed with the ball, claiming 2 wickets to help seal the win. A great all-round performance from the team.
A somewhat humbling loss to local neighbours KGS saw the U15A team well beaten. KGS scored 160-4, despite losing their dangerous opener cheaply to Claremont’s leading bowler Will H, who took a deserved 2-15 in his four overs. Claremont struggled to keep the bye runs in check, and lost control of the game at the midway point, conceding runs heavily after promising opening overs from Will, Ash V and Ally J (Y9), who bowled tidily playing a year up in this match.
Claremont’s response saw a steady succession of wickets, as KGS held every chance offered, and looked much sharper in the field. A belligerent 21 from Felix D was the only score in double figures, the visitors succumbing to 101 all out with the penultimate ball of the 20 overs, indebted to the 50 Extras the hosts conceded. With figures of 5-17, Max M was the standout bowler for KGS. He mentioned that his brother, Charlie M, is a Claremont pupil—so he likely enjoyed the bragging rights on Tuesday evening!
This was expected to be a really tough game, and the girls were understandably nervous. However, under sunny skies, their first-half performance was outstanding. Bowling with pace and accuracy, Ella S and Holly R were both miserly with runs and took key wickets, severely limiting Surbiton’s scoring rate. They were followed by the rest of the bowling attack, with Thea J bowling very effectively and Emily R taking three more wickets to bring the Surbiton innings to a close.
A score of 126 was solid, but on a small ground with a fast outfield, it was still within reach if one of Claremont’s players could get going. The girls made a positive start against very strong bowling. Although the scoring rate was not high, Ella, Adeline I and Holly chipped away steadily at the total. However, Surbiton’s change bowlers proved to be the difference, taking wickets in a sudden flourish. One bowler even finished the game with a hat-trick.
This was a hugely positive performance for the girls and sets them up nicely for this week’s game against the Surbiton B team. Ella was named Player of the Game.
We are extremely excited to be hosting the annual ISFA U13 & U11 7-a-side Surrey qualifying tournament here at Claremont on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 May. Good luck to all the girls who are taking part in this fantastic event!
