In this week’s sports round-up, we’re shining a spotlight on Claremont’s highly successful archery squad, who have won a range of medals across the competitions they’ve entered this term — alongside our regular coverage of all school sports.

Archery

Windsor shoot

Our archers attended the 74th Windsor shoot. We had Rosie shooting Bearbow at a Windsor 50 (3 doz @50 yards, 3doz@40yards, 3 doz @30yards), Baxter shooting Bearbow and Nathanial at a Windsor 40 (3 doz@40yards. 3doz@30yards, 3doz@20 yards). The shoot is held in view of Windsor Castle in Home Fields, and we were very lucky with the weather and excellent conditions for a day of shooting – not too hot, no rain and very little wind. It is not very often you can say that for a shoot in the UK! All the children shot extremally well coming home with three GOLD medals! During the day I had so many archers from different clubs come up to me and say that the Claremont children are so well mannered and behaved, and that they are a credit to the school. What more can you ask for? We are so proud of them in every way.

Middlesex county championship

Three archers form Claremont went to represent the school at the Middlesex county championship, an all-day competition of 12 dozen arrows (the biggest archery rounds there are). Max (year 13) shot gents Barebow on a Bristol 2 (60.50.40 yards). Comet (year 11) shot lady Barebow on a Bristol 3 (50,40,30 yards) and Rupert (year 8) shooting Jr gent Barebow on a Bristol 5 (30,20,10, yards) in his first competition.

The day was challenging with a constant wind that kept changing direction and intensity from arrow to arrow, not to mention the changes in temperature, all of which can really affect how your arrows fly! The result was all three of our children winning their category and bow types, so we have three Middlesex champions for Gents Barebow on a Bristol 2, Jr lady Barebow on a Bristol 3, and Jr gent Barebow on a Bristol 5. Extremely well shot and well done to everyone.

Southern Counties Portsmouth Postal League

The school entered a postal league over the winter season, where we had to enter a score for a Portsmouth round every month from October to March (a Portsmouth round is 5 dozen arrows shot at 20 yards on a 60cm target). This round is normally shot indoors; we shot outdoors in all weathers and cold!! Clubs from six different counties across the South of England entered. Claremont, shooting for Surrey, had archers in the Surrey Jr team EVERY month, helping Surrey win the Jr section (the only winning surrey team).

Medals have been awarded to:

  • Team gold for: Comet  (Year 11), Finn (Year 12), Rosie (Year 9)

With individual medals for:

  • Jay (Year 13) bronze for Jr gent’s recurve
  • Rosie (Year 9) for Jr lady Barebow

Athletics

On Friday 6 June, several Claremont pupils attended the West Surrey Prep School athletics championships at the Guildford Spectrum track. To be selected, nominated pupils had to meet a selection standard based on their personal best time or distance. The standard of athletics was high with the winner of each event selected to proudly represent West Surrey at the prestigious National Prep School Championships taking place on Thursday 3 July at Birmingham.

Claremont pupils did themselves proud, demonstrating why they had been selected with some amazing performances. Ethan S stormed to success by winning the U13 boys 800m, Ellie W pipped a local rival from St. Catherine’s to win the U14 girls’ hurdles. Stand out performances went to Will G who won both the U13 Boys high jump and U13 Boys hurdles. Pippa H followed in her older brothers’ footsteps from the previous year by winning both the U13 girls shot and discus in dominant fashion. All four now will have a chance to become National Prep School Champion at the beginning of July in Birmingham.

Cricket

U15A Girls v Wallington

An ultimately comfortable victory for the U15A Girls, who restricted Wallington to 94 runs from their 20 overs, then chased it down with relative ease. Wallington struggled to build momentum despite the 51 extras gifted, as wickets steadily fell. Emily and Adeline were the pick of the Claremont bowlers after Ella opened the account with a catch and bowled.

The game played in great spirit, was dominated by Claremont openers Adeline (38) and Ella (40 retired), the three late wickets to fall reward for a game host team, but the score by then too close to have any bearing on the result. A lovely ground, bright sunshine, a happy vibe, what an enjoyable afternoon. Congratulations to Player of Match Adeline & Ella.

U14B v St James

The U14B played away at St James School. Claremont batted first and scored 74 off 20 overs. After some good bowling they conceded defeat in the 14th over as the opposition manged to chase down the score. Harry S batted well scoring 13. Jake W was the pick off the bowlers with 2 overs 4 runs for 1 wicket.

U13A v Wimbledon College

U13B played Wimbledon College at home and after some good bowling and restricting the opposition to 64 runs they set out to chase the score down and did it in 8 overs. Stand out player, opening batsman Max S scoring 16 not out, after taking 2 wickets for 1 run in his single over.

U12A Girls v Jags

After winning the toss the team decided to field first. Jags were very strong with the bat and Claremont managed to restrict them to 131/8. CFC then tried to chase the score and came up 25 short ending on 106/8. Excellent performances by Genevieve H, scoring 22 with the bat and Molly S, wicketkeeping for the first time and taking a great caught behind.

Lacrosse

We are thrilled to announce that four of our Year 8 girls have been selected by England Lacrosse in the Aspire programme following the trials held earlier this term – A huge congratulations to Lulu Gibbs, Mia Heslop, Georgia Day and Ella Newton.

Tennis

U13 LTA League Tennis Match vs. City of London Freemens

What a great match against City of London Freemens!  We played on their astro turf courts and enjoyed some fantastic rallies and strong play throughout. Although the final score didn’t go our way, the boys gave it their all and showed real determination. Well done to Aneel K, Roshan P, Oscar I and Giles S for their excellent effort and sportsmanship. Keep up the great work, team!

U13 Girls Surrey League – Quarterfinals

The girls faced Putney in a nail-biting quarterfinal match that could have gone either way. There was some amazing tennis on display, with long rallies and great determination as the girls fought hard for every point. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with the win this time, but the team played admirably and showed great spirit throughout. Well done to Alice B, Genevieve H, Mia H, and Ane BG for their fantastic effort!
