Mia B on point at the Maia international Acro gymnastics cup in Portugal.
It’s been an exciting and demanding start to the competition season for Mia and her new partnership. This is Mia’s first time out on the ‘elite’ circuit and there’s been a lot to celebrate. With 2 National level and 2 International competitions so far, one involving a trip to Portugal against 30 other teams, there have been medals of all colours and several personal bests achieved. With more competitions to come it is exciting to see what happens next for this partnership.
The 3rd XI played football against Claires Court at home today and after an excellent 1st half they were 2-0 down but had chances to score and dominated stages of the game. The 2nd half was not so good as the shape disappeared towards an eventual 3-1 loss. Claremont’s goal came from Kris R.
The 4th XI put in a determined performance but ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat against a well-organized Claires Court side. Despite the result, the team showed great resilience and defensive discipline throughout the match. Zac Dale T was a standout performer in defence, battling hard to keep the opposition at bay.
The 1st VII netball team had a wet but wonderful Versatility tournament on Wednesday against Dunnottar, City of London, Woldingham and Reeds. In a fun but competitive tournament and with the weather proving difficult, the pupils enjoyed some fun netball to end the season and came a deserved 2nd place.
A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile tournament for Claremont U12s, who remained competitive all day. Two opening victories against Freemens and Ashcombe set the tone, somewhat arrested in a tight affair against RGS and by the size of a couple of the Glyn players in a narrow defeat, before a thrilling 2-2 draw against Wallington in the final pool game.
Results determined that Claremont came fourth in these initial pool stage, only narrowly missing a second-place finish. The afternoon saw a rejigged mini pool, with two further matches. Despite battling hard, these both ended in defeat, to Weydon by a single score and to Hampton by a couple.
With players ranging widely in physique and height, tackling at this age requires technique and bravery, Claremont too upright on occasion, but the ball distribution got better by the game, earning some terrific team tries. Tiaam was a dynamo, even scoring a couple of wingers tries out wide, with Aaron nominated the Claremont Player of the
Tournament for his all-round excellence. Well done to this young squad, tournament experience banked, lessons well learnt and applied.
A hugely enjoyable run out for this evolving squad saw Claremont win their opening games against St James and Cedars, before a brilliant recovery stole a last gasp draw against Hampton. On a long day, with calves cramping, hamstrings tightening, the prospect of an unbeaten Surrey 7s outing required victory in the final match, this proving a game too far as the wheels came off despite a gallant effort to keep hopes against Gordon’s alive.
Will C was highly influential, Roshi the speedster out wide. Jay was all power in centre field, with the whole squad starting to understand the Sevens game better, passing swiftly, sensing gaps. Two outstanding tackles from pocket rocket Adri put Hampton on the back foot, Will scuttling away to tie the game at 3-3.
A terrific effort by the boys, the popularity of the pancake wagon a sure sign of the good humour and fun on show. Crepes with a rich blend of tournament tries and tackles, topped with chocolate sauce; quite a day out.
A tough tournament for the U15 saw just one win in the pool stage, before a welcome Bye round ushered in a Shield semi-final victory over Halliford. Reeds proved too strong in the Final to close out a somewhat disappointing afternoon, that promised more given the sum of the Claremont parts.
Frustrating opening defeats to Glyn and Dunottar premised the Box Hill win, before a battling performance against eventual losing Finalists Cranmore and a fine game against St John’s both saw Claremont on the wrong end of the scoreline.
Josh H was at the heart of the Claremont effort, with good support from a squad that will be irked by results on a day where some Sevens naivety was exposed. Claremont scored some good tries and were competitive throughout but should reflect on key moments that tilted the gradient of the tournament away from them, ironically matching the downhill incline of the pitch.
The U14s continued their progress towards the forthcoming National 7s by taking part in the Downsend 7s. In cold conditions the boys started strongly with several well constructed tries against Dunottar.
Their second fixture proved to be the overall tournament decider. Sevenoaks had a well balanced side and challenged Claremont for the entire game. A couple of mismatches saw Sevenoaks win 31-21. From then on, this strong side steamrolled Downsend, Lingfield, Reigate GS and finally Caterham. There were some outstanding performances on the day, notably from Lucus, Archie and James S. The whole squad stepped up hugely from the recent Surrey 7s outing.
