Sports round-up
·30 January 2026
Rumours that a Mr Noah has left his half finished Ark in the bottom car park cannot be substantiated, but we can all agree it is still raining! ‘Dry January’ (more oxymoron than meteorological metaphor) has squelched into flooded February, but somehow, despite the deluge, sport fixtures have taken place across the past week. Regrettably, the U15 South Schools Lacrosse had to be postponed, but we did manage an almost full raft of football fixtures last weekend. We open with our ‘Team of the Week’ feature and trust the weather gods follow Woden’s azure Wednesday offering in the coming days.
The U13C football team continued their excellent start to the season with a hard-fought 1–0 victory against a strong Halliford side. The result was a clear reflection of the team’s focus and commitment in training throughout the week, with players showing great organisation and discipline from the first whistle to the last. A disciplined and resilient defensive performance saw the team earn their second clean sheet in a row, with Eryk delivering another immense display at the back to keep the opposition at bay. In midfield, Alec C was dominant throughout, controlling the tempo of the game and driving the team forward with confidence. The decisive moment came from Oscar T, who scored the only goal of the match to secure a well-deserved win. Overall, the match highlighted the team’s excellent attitude and work rate, both on and off the ball. Players of the Match: Eryk and Alec C.
Claremont U15 girls played in the area cup cricket indoor finals. Both matches hung on fine margins! Against Nonsuch, one run was needed off the last ball to win, but CFC missed the chance of a run out and lost a close game.
In the Surbiton game, the CFC girls were chasing 76. Down to their last wicket with nine balls left, they could not close the game, with the final score finishing on 72. The standout batter was Jessica A. Best bowler was Isobel S.
U13A girls played in the indoor Cricket County Cup Round 2.
In the first game against Putney, they drew a fantastic match at 94 to each team, with Grace A chasing down 39 in the final two overs, hitting four sixes in one over.
In game two against Tiffins, they lost in another very close match, with the opposition managing to chase the CFC score of 91 in 6.4 overs. The outstanding batter was Grace A and outstanding bowler was Alyssa E.
Halliford are always a tough opponent and their first five minutes of this game showed they were a team full of confidence. Strong pressure led to two early corners and from the second, a well worked plan and excellent delivery was met by a bullet header into the top corner. It wasn’t the start we wanted and seemed to leave us at odds with each other for a while. Another soft goal came from a speculative shot and then a third from good play. Eight minutes in and three goals down, but it was from here that the team switched on. Some reorganisation of structure and just greater purpose from all the boys made the game even. Indeed, over the course of the next 40 minutes the balance of play was in Claremont’s favour. Jack H became more and more influential in his role as a CDM and Blake A, as always, provided the impetus to get the ball forward. Solid performances by Lucas R and Henry meant that there was little threat on goal from Halliford again until late in the second half. In a lone striking role, James S actually managed to keep three defenders occupied. However, whereas all the Halliford strikes on goal seemed to find the top corner, Claremont’s snuck wide or were saved. As it was, it was Halliford who managed to score another soft goal late in the second half. Take nothing away from Halliford, whose first five probably dictated the game, but Claremont could easily have been level if the bounce of the ball had been more favourable.
The U15B had a tough game against Halliford on a pitch which was difficult to control the ball on. At half time the score was 3-0 against us, but with a few tweaks the boys then managed to hold their own and score from a penalty (James C), with the game ending at 4-1 to the opposition. POM was Aidan K in goal.
They say football is a game of two halves, and while it may be a cliché, this match demonstrated it perfectly. Riding high after an excellent display against CLFS, the U14As arrived full of confidence and ready for a new challenge. What they didn’t expect was the clinical edge shown by the opposition. Within 15 minutes of kick-off, they found themselves 0–4 down. Halliford, fully deserving of their lead, played through the lines with precision and ruthlessness, converting every opportunity that fell their way.
It took a true captain’s moment from Will to steady the side. His determination sparked a response, and he pulled one back after reacting quickest to a loose ball in the six-yard box, making it 1–4. Unfortunately, Claremont conceded twice more before the break, leaving the score at a daunting 1–6. Will was a standout performer in the first half, with Harry and Zack also offering bright moments whenever chances were carved out. Half-time brought renewed fire and focus. The players were determined not to go quietly, and after a few strong words and a collective reset, they emerged with purpose. This time it was Claremont who started the better side. Showing the quality they have displayed throughout the season, they created a wave of chances that kept the Halliford goalkeeper busy. A well-timed through ball sent Jack through on goal, and he finished confidently to begin the comeback. Momentum built quickly, and Claremont continued to press. Jack struck again with another composed finish, and Zack curled in a superbly placed free-kick to bring the deficit back to 4–6.
The final ten minutes were frantic. Halliford extended their lead to 4–7 before their goalkeeper was shown a red card for bringing down the last man. Zack stepped up once more, firing home from distance to make it 5–7 at the full-time whistle. Despite the result, the second-half performance is one the players can take huge pride in. They showed heart, tenacity and resilience, coupled with patches of genuinely excellent football. It sets a strong standard to carry into their next fixture. Player of the Match deservedly went to Will, whose captain’s display was defined by tough tackles, intelligent passing and a well-taken goal.
It was a tough day at the office for the U14Bs after a cold and wet week. The 7-1 scoreline, however, looks harsh after what was a decent performance from the boys. We created some good chances and put together some lovely pieces of build-up play, but it was our work in the final third that let us down, as well as some strong opposition defenders that didn’t let us have the freedom we wanted. Our heads didn’t drop at all throughout the game, and our efforts were finally rewarded when Rupert tucked away our only goal with a nice finish in the final minute of the game. Back to the training ground, but certainly some positives to take from the game.
We started the game well, looked disciplined and defensively sound, working hard for each other and keeping the score to 0–0 at half-time. We also had some promising moments going forward, but the opposition’s defence was strong and did well to keep our attacks under control.
The second half remained competitive for the opening 10 minutes, but the opposition found a way through and scored two quick goals, which changed the momentum of the game. In the final 15–20 minutes we were unable to maintain our defensive intensity, and the opposition took advantage, including a brilliant free kick that was unstoppable. There are plenty of positives to take, particularly from our first-half shape, effort and togetherness. Most importantly, the boys never gave up and kept working right until the final whistle, which is exactly the attitude we want to see. Player of the Match: Barend
This certainly was a game of two halves! After a strong defensive performance, Claremont were 1-0 up and then Halliford applied more pressure in the second half, scoring six goals and the game ending in a 6-1 loss. POM was Dylan K and goal scorer was Olly G.
The U14Bs had a tricky and competitive game this weekend, working extremely hard throughout. Despite the lack of players from our team, the girls worked extremely hard and fought back, especially in the second half, where more goals were scored than the opposing team. There were some impressive displays of defence, shout out to Emilie, who put incredible effort in and managed to win the ball a lot. POM went to Poppy and Emilie.
On Saturday the 31st of January, we won against the U12A team of Walthamstow Hall by 12-0. We were set the challenge that we had to do two passes and then go through the X behind the goal, which we achieved almost every time. We were good at settled attack around the 11 and were better at passing calmly and not rushing our passes. We need to work on our ground balls as we weren’t as good with them as we could be, as well as clearing from the goal and the positions where we should be to help the goalie.
The U14A netball team, captained by Jess, produced a determined and confident performance to secure their place in the semi-final of the National ‘Sisters n Sport’ Netball Trophy.
From the opening whistle, the team showed exactly why they have progressed so far in the competition. Strong communication and sharp passing through the court allowed the attackers to build an early lead, while the defensive unit applied constant pressure, forcing key turnovers at crucial moments. Jess led by example throughout the match, motivating the team and maintaining composure during high-pressure phases of play. The midcourt worked tirelessly to transition the ball, creating numerous scoring opportunities, which were calmly converted in the shooting circle.
As the match intensified in the second half, the opposition challenged strongly, but the U14A team responded with resilience and discipline. Excellent interceptions and rebounds in defence prevented any late comeback, while controlled attacking play ensured the lead was maintained until the final whistle. The final score reflected a well-earned victory, 26-24, and marked a significant achievement for the squad, who now advance to the national semi-final. This result is a testament to the team’s hard work, commitment and teamwork throughout the tournament.

A big win for the firsts this week against Sutton High. With Annika and Eilidh having their first game back from injury, the team worked really well together to come away with a 21-10 win! The defence’s work rate was continuous throughout the whole game, while the shots in the circle were accurate and consistent. Well done to Eilidh and Olivia for getting Players of the Match!
Sutton High was a well matched opponent; we dominated the first quarter focusing on our set plays like our one over centre passes. We were loud on court and had great communication. Although we didn’t keep a consistent lead, our defence and movement in the circle remained strong. This match highlighted our positive outlook. The score ended 8-7 to Claremont.
Three excellent victories for the U15 squads against Notre Dame, with the girls demonstrating good understanding of the week’s coaching points, transitioning well and earning success in all three matches.

The U12A team had a good performance on Friday against St Georges! Drawing after the first quarter, the pupils showed slick through court and turned over lots of ball. The attack gradually grew in confidence, however struggled to finish on the shot. It was a great game and showed resilience and competitiveness, ready for next week.

The U12C team had a great start to their match on Friday with fantastic transitions up the court, however we did struggle converting the ball to goal. We had the majority of the possession throughout the match, which was excellent, and the pupils put into play what they had learnt in lessons. We would now like to see more of the pupils at shooting clinic!

Training continues for all squads, with the opening tournament of the term scheduled across next week, involving every age group in a league competition to win the inaugural Mole Valley Series Cup. Four schools will vie for the prize, Claremont, Dunottar, CLFS and RGS Surrey Hills (Box Hill), all hoping the weather permits this new initiative to take place.
