Intent on raining on the Claremont sports parade, the capricious weather gods have conjured a challenging start to the Spring term. Between incessant rain showers, a handful of fixtures have managed to defy the elements, however, as we begin our weekly synopsis of the school sports programme.

Football

U12A v Salesian

One of just two fixtures across the school to survive Storm Goretti, the U12A travelled to Salesian’s all-weather pitch and came away with a deserved victory…..

The U12A team delivered a fantastic performance in their first outing of 2026, securing a well-deserved 3–1 win against a strong Salesian College side. Although the team started tentatively, having had limited time playing together, they quickly settled and showed excellent positional balance and organisation throughout the match.

Rotations were frequent, and every player worked tirelessly, being solid in defence and quick, direct and creative in attack. Some superb goals were scored by Lawson W-Y, Oscar W and Ollie M. Player of the Match went to Louie P for his outstanding organisation at the back and exceptional reading of the game. We are excited to see how this team continues to develop over the season with their hard work and determination.

U12B v Salesian

An exciting first fixture for the U12B saw the team fall to a narrow 3–4 loss on the Salesian 3G pitch. Goals from Brodie, Clement and Max saw Claremont compete right to the end, with Player of the Match James S-W a colossus in defence, stopping multiple attacks. A breathless end-to-end encounter saw Salesian seize the spoils in the dying minutes, with Claremont running out of time to respond for a fourth time. Well done all, a great start.

Lacrosse

Regrettably, the entire Saturday 10 January programme was lost to the weather. The U14 County Tournament was postponed due to the relentless rain this week and will be played later in the term.

Netball

1st VII v Sutton High School

This week, the 1st team played a very competitive and close match with Notre Dame. The first match of the year without the Y13s saw the team come away with a 14–14 draw in an extremely tight game across all four quarters. The defence was strong and determined throughout, making some good interceptions and strong one-on-one marking. They did, however, lack communication, which is something to improve for the next match. At the shooting end, the shooters received some excellent overhead balls into the D, putting them in a perfect position to shoot. Overall, we came away with a great result, and Clara B received the opposition’s Player of the Match.

2nd VII v Sutton High School

Despite being a mix of players, the 2nd VII pulled together well to compete against Notre Dame. With strong through-court play, the attack worked swiftly to get the ball to goal and really looked to utilise a variety of placements in their feeds to the shooters. The defence worked very well to win the ball, however, as a team they struggled to convert it on this occasion. Congratulations to Millie on getting MVP in her first game for the 2s, and to Megan as captain. Well done to all involved in what was a competitive and tough match.

3rd VII v Sutton High School

A tough game for a mostly U16 team against Sutton’s seniors. The team had a good amount of possession and kept working hard throughout the game. They did not give up and powered through until the end. They developed well and looked to put new tactics from training into the game but did not quite succeed against Sutton’s defence. An admirable effort and a lot of fun throughout, well done to all involved.

U13A v Sutton High School

The team played Sutton High School on Monday and won convincingly, 24–6. Players of the Match were Julia and Naomi. The main weaknesses identified were catching and passing in front, while key strengths included strong set plays, excellent feeds into the D and effective turnovers. Individual performances stood out across the team: Tabby stuck tightly to her player; Julia and Naomi both showed strong drives and an effective puller system; Eleanor demonstrated accurate shooting; Helena created good options; Olivia F used her arms well over the ball; and Ella made some great interceptions.

U13B v Sutton High School

The B team had a great game on Monday. Everyone played very well, and centre passes were a strong point, but the team needs to work on quicker release of the ball without panic launching it. Apart from that, all played really well, with Players of the Match Holly and Molly offering headline heaven. Well done to all involved.

U13C v Sutton High School

Here is a match report from the captain: The match on Monday was won 13–1 against Sutton High. I thought the match went very well overall; the passes were fast and we communicated really well. As you can see, our defence team did a really great job and I noticed they always had a back-up option for passes, making the game flow smoothly. In attack, I think we did really well because we were clear with our communication and very rarely did footwork. I do think we missed a few opportunities for goals from shooting rebounds and obstructions, but this was rare, and overall it was a very good match.

Rugby Sevens

Rugby 7s training has commenced despite the weather, with age groups looking towards tournaments later in the term. The senior squad is training at Old Cranleighans RFC on Saturday mornings. There are tournaments for U12 to Seniors, including Surrey County and National Sevens at Rosslyn Park (subject to inclusion in the draw), as well as a new initiative, the Mole Valley Series, with several local schools, including Dunottar and CLFS, competing across the week prior to half term. Each age group will be hosted by participating schools on different days, competing for a newly minted overall league winners’ Cup.
