Packed lunches and fixture lists have fuelled an abundance of sport this side of the interval with Half Term oranges providing a week long rest from a loaded Sports itinerary. Precipitation or participation; the confused climate in this lead up week continues to challenge. We hope you all enjoy the break and the promised warmer weather ahead. On our return in June, Arsenal will be crowned Champions, Spurs or West Ham will be relegated, Pep will have managed Man City for the last time. All change in the Premiership League, but here at Claremont, the shorter but no less dramatic second half denouement to the Summer Term offers a Sports spectacle. Weather or whether bat, ball, racquet or bow, track or field, you will find it here!

Athletics

Tues Y7&8 Track

Y8 Relay team led the way in this track meet, with Will G (Y7) excellent in the 200m.

Thurs Y9&10 Track and Field

Hector F stormed to victory in the 300m, with a determined effort from James D in the 100m and  Zac L and Jack D strong in the 800m. There are plenty of Athletics meets.

Cricket

Claremont Girls 1st XI v Reeds

An ultimately convincing victory for Reeds, but Claremont battled hard with a mixed team including four Y8 girls who all acquitted themselves admirably. Reeds openers stole the thunder on a sloping outfield, ignoring the contours in clearing the ropes several times. Milly O volunteered to keep wicket and did an excellent job, backed up  good bowling from Alyssa and Amelia in particular. The Reeds total of 157 was formidable, but Claremont nurdled away, eventually reaching 105 in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of nine wickets on a thoroughly pleasant afternoon at the cricket.

Claremont U15A Girls v Tiffin School

In the first round of the County Cup the U15’s faced Tiffin Girls. With bad weather incoming and a shortened game Claremont went into bat with intensity from the start. Ella and Holly built a strong partnership seeing off many of the Tiffin bowlers in style and setting a total of 99 to beat.

Our bowling attack was strong as ever but today was also matched with some sharp fielding. After taking a couple of early wickets the game paused to allow a hail storm to pass over. On returning to the field, despite a 15 minute break, Emily’s first ball back completed her hat-trick (three of her five bowled wickets). This set the tone for the rest of the game where wickets fell as quickly as runs were gained. Zoey took 3 wickets in the 9th over to complete a great game. POM – Ella 32* and Emily 3-10-5

Claremont U15A v Halliford

In what proved to be a tough day for the boys, it still provided some excellent performances. Lucas R performed beautifully with the bat, stroking four deliveries to the boundary in his score of 23 off 31 balls.  James A and Max S both bowled with real pace and accuracy, causing Halliford’s batsmen a number of problems. They each picked up a wicket and were unlucky not to get more.  With a target of only 76 runs, Halliford achieved their total with eight overs to spare, winning by 8 wickets.

U15B v Halliford

A disappointing morning away at Weybridge Vandals ground, saw the hosts ease to a straightforward victory in a reduced over game. Halliford dominated the game, scoring 141-4 in their 16 overs, with one player retired after a fine fifty. Wickets for Elliot (2), Ed C, and a first ball scalp for Harry were rare bright sparks. In reply, Claremont never really got going, wickets tumbling with regularity, as the visitors declined to 85 all out, Extras (40) comfortably the top scorer.

U14A v St James

An interesting match against St James who scored 74/10 off 18.1 overs. The boys managed to comfortably chase it down with a loss of one wicket in 7.1 overs with extras the top scorer with 40. MOM was Sam B with 4 overs 2 wickets 10 runs and was on a hat trick ball. Best Newcomer was Maccy D serving up a few pies!

U13B v Halliford

U13B had a tough game against Halliford who posted 149-6. Claremont manage to get a score of 86-9 with some good bowling and fielding from the opposition. Highlight of the game and star fielder was Alex Burrows who took two catches; the best diving full and taking the ball with one hand to dismiss Halliford’s star batsmen who was on 43.

Claremont U12A v Halliford

Another lovely Saturday morning for the U12A’s against one of our fiercest rivals. On the back of a hard-fought tied game against Ibstock, we looked to keep up the strong momentum from last game – and incredibly, it went down to the very last ball again.

Halliford chose to bat first, with a strong opening partnership that proved difficult to break. Claremont also seemed to have been sleeping in the field, and after 10 overs Halliford had 80 runs on the board with the game apparently slipping away.

But momentum is a funny thing in sports – one minute you are winning, and the next it can all flip. Max P broke the partnership, followed by Tharuk’s first-ball LBW. What followed was nothing short of one of the great sporting comebacks. A flurry of wickets followed, with some incredible ‘catch of the season’ contenders from Finn J’s overhead catch, and Max P picked out a painful but brilliant catch at Point. Tidy bowling from Olly M, Will E and James H kept the run rate low and a spin masterclass from Ethan C and Tharuk S, each picking up three wickets, led to Halliford being bowled all out for 119.

George S and Tharuk S opened against strong opening bowlers and formed a solid partnership, with Max P later coming in to build a foundation to our innings. Although Claremont had plenty of wickets in hand, the run rate seemed to be slipping away, needing roughly 8.00 per over from the last 10. But in came a partnership of Brodie J and Harrison J, scoring 36 and 24 respectively. Brodie put the pressure back on the bowlers with a succession of boundaries, and Harrison was excellent in communication and running between the wickets. The fielding side simply did not know how to handle these two as they would always find gaps in the field, and strong running kept Claremont’s score ticking, eventually needing a run a ball.

In the final overs Halliford returned to their opening bowlers, needing 6 from the final over, with crowds of perhaps dozens gathering on the side. Quick singles kept it going, with Harrison diving into the crease to tie the scores. In classic 12A style it was down to the last ball in a high-pressure moment to win the game. Brodie stepped up and hit the ball towards mid-off. It was now or never. Brodie ran down the wicket and safely made it home – Claremont had won the match! An incredible end to an incredible game, with plenty of positives to take away. For his very mature innings, Brodie was Man of the Match.

Tennis

Greta B played in the Tennis Europe u12 category 1 – highest European level tournament. Greta had a great few days making the quarter finals, where she played the girl who won the Romanian national championships last year. It was a Cat1 tournament so first time she’d played a full 3 sets.  Greta lost the match 6-2 4-6 4-6, but was 3-0 in the third but couldn’t quite get it done across 2 hours 45mins in 27-degree heat – very tough!

U13 Girls LTA League

The U13 Girls took on Rosebery School in the LTA League group stages today and secured a fantastic 6–0 victory. The comfortable win sees the U13 Girls finish top of their group and progress through to the quarter-finals of the LTA League. The girls played brilliantly throughout and should be very proud of their performances. Well done to Greta B, Genevieve H, Elsa O-B and Lily E-S.

U15 LTA league

As we come to the end of this half term, the U15 Boys have had a full week of tennis. They took part in the U15 LTA League, where they faced St George’s School, Royal Grammar School, George Abbot School and Esher High School. The students secured comfortable wins against George Abbot and Esher High. RGS proved to be our toughest fixture, with the team narrowly losing 4–2. Against St George’s, the match finished 3–3, and unfortunately, we were defeated in the tie-break. The students played exceptionally well throughout the week. It was an excellent afternoon of fantastic matches, long rallies, and great determination from the boys, who worked incredibly hard. Well done to Harry S, Charlie S, Nathaniel R-T and Leo B.

U16 Sports Magazine

As the half term draws to a close, our U16 Boys took on Emanuel School on Saturday morning in the second-last round of the Sports School Magazine competition at Claremont Fan Court School. The students produced some amazing tennis, with long rallies, great determination, and resilience throughout each match. Every player fought hard and never gave up, making it an incredibly intense contest from start to finish. The match came down to the very last point, with Claremont securing a fantastic 4–2 victory. The boys will now take on Colfe’s School in the final round before the semi-finals of the competition. Well done to Harry S, Charlie S, Nathaniel R-T and Leo Brannan.

Girls U18 Branston Shield

Our girls took on Trinity School in the quarter-finals of the Branston Shield. The girls played extremely well, producing some lovely shots and moving their opponents around the court brilliantly. They showed great determination throughout the matches. Well done to the students for securing a place in the semi-finals of the Branston Shield against James Allen’s Girls’ School. Congratulations to Greta B, Elsa O-B, Genevieve H and Linea H.

Old Cranleighans Y6 Schools Tag Rugby Tournament

Future rugby stars enjoyed a sun soaked, fun day at Old Cranleighans RFC as over 250 students took part in this annual Tag Rugby tournament. A huge success, this event grows stronger every year, attracting a host of neighbouring schools. Claremont entered Y6 Boys and Girls teams as Tags and tries rained in across the campus. The boys won 5 from 5, playing some outstanding offloading support rugby, the Girls 3 from 5, with good sportsmanship, smiles and ice lollies all round.
