Three frenetic weeks until the end of term, with Sports Days, Sports Awards ceremonies, Gala Day alumni football matches, ISTA Tennis Finals, National Athletics Finals and a host of cricket fixtures to pack in. With improved weather this past week, let’s hope we can all revert to Factor 50 and some glorious sunshine as the term winds down. With Wimbledon around the corner, and the World Cup underway, the next month promises a sports spectacular, Claremont students enjoying a vast range of sporting opportunity, the Staff sweepstake less so for some! Cape Verde for the Cup!

Athletics

On Saturday 12 June, a selected few Claremont pupils competed in the Surrey Schools athletics championship at Kingsmeadow track in Kingston. Ellie W progressed from her 80m hurdles heat into the final, where she finished fourth. Her performance was excellent considering she was competing in the U16 level a year young. She approached the race with maturity to gain experience ahead of next year when she will be stronger and faster. Giles and Pippa H took part in the U16 javelin and U14 shot respectively, and we are proud to say that they won both events and are now Surrey Schools champions. They will progress to compete for Surrey next weekend in the Inter counties. We wish they all the very best.

Cricket

U15A v KGS

U15A batted first and through some great batting from Max S, Charlie M, Lucas R and James A, managed to reach a strong defendable total of 135-8. KGS started well, but through some great fielding by Charlie Mason with an amazing run out, Claremont held the opposition back at the halfway stage, KGS were 68/4 after ten overs. CFC bowling and fielding was less intense in the final 10 overs and KGS managed to close the game out in 18 overs. MVP was Max S scoring a quality 36 off some very strong bowling.

U15B v KGS

A rather torpid game, saw Claremont unable to challenge a sizeable 165-3 KGS total, the hosts captain and opener retired unbeaten on 47. Claremont did not take a wicket until the twelfth over, the 119 opening stand dictating the match. Two consecutive wickets fell at this score, Brodie narrowly missing out on a hattrick, Ed C the best of the remaining bowlers. Claremont’s response got off to a soporific start, never able to accelerate sufficiently, the 117 total achieved through the efforts of Extras (61) Charlie C (18) and Ed C (15) in particular, as the game put it’s feet up on the balcony and drifted off in the afternoon sunshine.

U15B v Reading Blue Coat School

The U15B played against Reading Blue Coat and although both sides only had five players, they still played a game with lots of juggling from both teams. Reading scored 93 for 6 wickets against great bowling. CFC then chased down the target in 10.3 overs with Callum M and Harry S both batting really well retiring in the mid twenties.

U14A v Reading Blue Coat School

Having lost the toss, Claremont were put into bat and straight from the start, batsman of the day, Zain, took control, scoring an impressive 49 runs. He was ably supported by Hugo (24 runs), Will (14 not out) and Jack (27 runs) who was controversially given out from the penultimate ball of the innings. A score of 157-5 was an impressive total on a bowler’s wicket. Highly motivated, the boys took to the field and wasted no time in taking wickets. In possibly the catch of the season, Will dived, mid-air to his left, to catch out Reading’s opening batsman from the first ball of the innings, off Dylan’s bowling. More impressive catches followed from Hugo and Zain. Bowler of the day had to go to spinner, Sam, who bamboozled every batsman with his devilish bowling which pitched and turned to perfection. He ended with 3 wickets for 10 runs in his 4 overs. Claremont finally took all 10 wickets winning the match by a season’s best 73 runs. Congratulations to the whole team.

Girls U14A v KGS

The U14’s celebrated a great win their final T20 of the year against KGS. Losing the toss and batting first, two early wickets were lost, but Mia and Alice did not let this deter them. They put together a composed innings and created a partnership of 105 (Alice 51* & Mia 49*), helping Claremont set a total of 138. The tempo remained in the field, not letting anything through despite some strong KGS batting. As wickets fell we restricted KGS to 127-6 in a closely contested but well deserved win.

Girls U14A v Manor House

The U14A Girls played in a 10 over pairs game against Manor House with only seven players and then one left halfway through so only had 6 players defending their total they set of 266/5. Some good batting by the girls. The girls then bowled exceptionally well considering they had 4 fielders to cover a huge pitch and boundary. They managed to restrict the opposition to 231/10. A really great team performance. MVP was Val P who bowled incredible line and length only giving away 8 runs in her 2 overs.

U14B v KGS

U14B played KGS who batted first scoring 119-4 against some fantastic bowling all round with Rupert W leading the attack with some unplayable left arm seam deliveries. The batting showed great quality, the target dismantled by the CFC openers in a partnership of 76 by the 10th over when the first wicket fell. The score was achieved in the 14 over with MVP captain Aneel K making 52 not out.

U13A v KGS (U14B)

Claremont U13A were well beaten by a dominant KGS team, who scored 179-5 from their 20 overs, the opener scoring 46, and then the No.6 battering the leather off the ball to all parts, in a sustained onslaught to take KGS home and clear. David was a magnet in the field, with two well taken catches and a direct run out, but Claremont struggled to hold the flow of runs. In reply, Claremont got off to the worst possible start, 3-3 after 8 balls, and scrabbling to 36-7 in the face of some accurate bowling. With the game gone, Jeffrey (24)Henry (11) and Barend (12) showed spirited resistance, Claremont reaching a creditable 110-9, well short of the target, but displaying determination.

U13A Girls v KGS

U13A girls batted first against KGS and managed to score 102-6. The girls then bowled really well and managed to keep close to the oppositions score eventually needing to take the last wicket with 2 overs to go and 3 needed. They thought they had bowled the last batter but it was off a free hit no ball. So close and an exciting end to a fantastic season. MVP batter was Genevieve H scoring 35. MVP bowler and fielder was Eleanor S with 2 wickets from 2 overs conceding just 7 runs, plus two fantastic catches including a caught and bowled.

U13B v Reading Blue Coat School

A strange game down in Reading, saw the hosts field just eight players, as we loaned them two fielders throughout the Claremont innings. The bowling was mostly accurate, with wickets for Charlie N 2-14 and Oscar 2-12 the stand outs. Extras added 50 to the RBC total of  137-7. In response, Claremont struggled to get the ball off the square, and will need to improve the calling between batters, which was too reserved. Until PoM Arthur (25), who also kept wicket well, and Tiaam (15) began to accelerate the score, the visitors seemed destined to fall well short. In the event,  CFC reached  125-7, twelve runs shy of victory.

Fencing

We are delighted to report some excellent results from Surrey Youth Team Championships on Sunday 14th June. We have included the U12 and U10 results because both fencers on our U12 winning team are joining the Senior School in September.

We fielded three teams in the U18 event, one in the U14, an U12 team and two U10 teams, with every team winning a medal. In total the team achieved 8 medals with 3 titles.

Four fencers also bravely entered the Senior Surrey Champs which was held in the afternoon of the same day and despite being well beaten by grown adults, some with decades of experience, they kept their enthusiasm and spirits up to enjoy the fights, score hits and learn how to face tougher opponents. Well done to Comet P, LJ P, Ben H(Men’s/Mixed event) and Ella G-F (Ladies event).

Rugby

Congratulations to Billy S (Y13) who played his first game for London & South East U20s.

Despite the loss to the North, the team had a strong second half, Billy scoring the first try for LSE, latching on to the back of a driving maul, at the start of the second half. The North held out against the revival however, pulling away at the end to win 42-21.

Tennis

The U16 Boys took on Colfe’s School in the semi-finals of the Sports School Magazine competition. It was always going to be a tough challenge, with Colfe’s fielding an outstanding U18 Great Britain player in their team. Despite the strength of the opposition, the Claremont boys rose to the occasion and produced some exceptional tennis. They battled hard in every match, showing tremendous determination, teamwork, and resilience throughout the tie. The standard of tennis on display was outstanding, and the boys represented the school with great pride. Although the match ended in a narrow 4–2 defeat, the result does not reflect just how competitive and hard-fought the contest was. It was a fantastic effort from the team and a fitting way to conclude an excellent season.

Congratulations and well done to Harry S, Charlie S, Nathaniel RT, and Leo B for their commitment, hard work, and achievements throughout the year. You have been fantastic ambassadors for Claremont tennis, and we are incredibly proud of everything you have accomplished.
