What an historic week as the three top finishers in the Men’s London Marathon completed the capital course as the fastest finishers of all time. With the mythical two hour barrier broken by both winner and runner up, Claremont’s own Mr Ferguson joined the largest Marathon field ever assembled and ran a fantastic time himself in raising funds for his chosen charity. Summer sports also revelled in the warmth this week, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics basking in the brilliant sunshine as a host of matches vied for top billing prior to the Bank holiday break. Ben M (Y11) refereed the U16 Boys Surrey Cup Final at Harlequins Stoop on Monday 27th, as an Esher team including Claremont’s Josh H and Ollie P, emerged as winners after leading 22-12 at half time, the game then abandoned due to a serious injury.

Athletics

Thursday saw a full Y7/8 Athletics meet, with brilliant performances from Effie H in the discus (11.50) and shot, Will G in the high jump (1.45m). The beautiful evening saw some excellent track and field, as we look forward to the multitude of Claremont hosted events the term.

Cricket

Internal matches between mixed A/B teams saw the U14 and U13 boys, along with the U12 Girls play competitive fixtures on a perfect Saturday 26th April morning, all teams benefiting from the opportunity to practice and develop their skills in anticipation of the raft of matches on the near horizon.

1st XI v Salesian

A terrific game on the main square saw Claremont fall just ten runs short in a valiant run chase. Chasing a daunting 178 for victory, Claremont openers Will H (48) and late replacement Ally J (27) enjoyed an eighty four run partnership, before Luca A (40) was joined by Max O (23), the sixth wicket pair narrowly missing out as the Salesian bowlers held their nerve. The 168-4 pursuit, came after the Salesian opener scored a fine 58, partnerships of sixty-five and forty-one anchored by some destructive hitting. Wickets for Ash V, Marcus R and Amerleigh P, were scant reward for a decent fielding display. On a perfect summer afternoon, this was a thoroughly entertaining and competitive match, Will H nominated as MoM, an impressive contribution from Luca A pushing him close.

U13A v Shrewsbury House – Watcyn Evans Trophy

Claremont were well beaten in the opening round of this trophy, unable to contain a fine opening pair, and unsurprisingly failing to chase a substantial 188-1 total

U12A v Reeds

On a beautiful, sunny afternoon Claremont played their first home game of the season on the main square. Reed’s chose to bowl first, as Tharuk S and George S came out to bat. Their strong partnership of 40 proved to be the backbone of the innings, reminiscent of a young Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss. Strong fielding from Reed’s resulted in two new batsmen at the crease at an important part of the innings. Some aggressive batting from Brodie J and Olly M resulted in boundary after boundary on the scoreboard, and put Claremont in a brilliant position going into the break with 146-5 after 20 overs.

Claremont came out to field in full force, with lighting fast bowling from Harrison J and Will W taking some early wickets. Excellent contributions from Finn J and Max P, as well as some tidy keeping from Oscar W, helped to take the game away from Reed’s. In the end it was Tharuk S’s spin masterclass that helped to seal the victory, with three wickets in two overs earning Man of the Match with Reed’s bowled out for 111. In all, a great performance and the team is looking forward to Monday when we take on St John’s.

U12A v St John’s Leatherhead – Jubilee Trophy

Claremont were comprehensively outplayed in the first round of the Surrey Jubilee Trophy, drawn against a particularly strong St Johns team containing a number of county players. Claremont elected to bowl first on a sweltering afternoon, and initially made good inroads, the visitors labouring to 49-4. Two fine partnerships of 51 and 37 from the John’s middle order took the game away however, Claremont tiring in the heat, the final 151-6 total including too many easy singles, Claremont guilty of sitting too deep in the field. Wickets from Brodie (plus two catches), Harrison (2), Finn J (2) and Tharuk were the highlights on a tough day.

Claremont’s innings began in muted fashion, and struggled throughout, as the cloud thickened. No batter reached double figures, St John’s bowlers their strength, the pace and consistency impressive. Wickets fell regularly, the hosts unable to breach an energetic fielding cordon. All out for 63, Claremont were well beaten in truth, the visitors easing through to the second round. Claremont will learn valuable lessons from this game, and should not be disheartened, the opposition was just too strong on the day. Keep the focus and energy in the field, be more forceful and dynamic with the bat to pressurise the bowlers. Keep attacking across the game, feed off each other’s enthusiasm, enjoy the teamwork, keep smiling!

U12B v Reeds

U12B won against Reeds after posting 131 for the loss of just two wickets. They then restricted the opposition to 120/6. Jackson F gave a great all round performance with some excellent batting with James H again Player of the Match for his bowling taking another 4 wickets.

The Claremont girls produced a determined and hardworking performance, looking to play forward at every opportunity. They created several good chances but were unable to convert, despite coming close on a number of occasions. Throughout the match, the team showed great resilience, battling hard in defence and supporting each other well. Special credit goes to Anais P, Holly G, and Xandi L who volunteered to play in goal, all of whom did an excellent job under pressure. Although the result didn’t go their way and a goal proved elusive, the effort, attitude and commitment shown by the whole team were very positive. Player of the match went to Lily M and Minnie F.
