Batons, balls, bails and brollies… Thunder roll up, roll up, welcome back to the second half of term, as the Sports calendar continues the steady stream of fixtures and biblical rainfall following the half term heatwave. A week is a long time in sport, just ask Arne Slot. The next five weeks promise equal drama, literally given the storms and lightning across the first week back!

Archery

Event: Middlesex Championships
Location: Osterley
Date: 24 May 2026

The Middlesex Championships at Osterley took place under extremely challenging conditions, with temperatures reaching a scorching 32°C throughout the day. Despite the intense heat, our archers showed outstanding resilience, composure, and sportsmanship.

Comet took on the demanding York round, shooting barebow well above their age group. The York is one of the traditional long-distance rounds, consisting of 72 arrows at 100 yards, 48 at 80 yards, and 24 at 60 yards, requiring both endurance and consistency over a full day of shooting. Comet handled this superbly, earning a gold medal and achieving a Surrey County record (pending confirmation)—a truly remarkable achievement.

Rosie competed in the Bristol II round (barebow), which is the junior equivalent of the York round, shot at 80, 60, and 50 yards. It still demands strong distance shooting and good stamina, and Rosie delivered a confident and consistent performance to secure gold.

Isabelle shot the Bristol IV round (barebow), designed for younger age categories and shot at 40, 30, and 20 yards. This round focuses more on precision and consistency at shorter distances. Isabelle had an excellent day, performing strongly throughout and earning the Lady Paramount’s Prize. This special award, chosen personally by the Lady Paramount, recognises an archer for their performance, conduct, or spirit, making it a particularly meaningful accolade.

We were also joined by Claremont alumni Max, who returned from university in Bristol to compete. Shooting the Bristol II round (barebow)—the same challenging distances as Rosie—Max delivered a superb performance to win his category.

The conditions made shooting especially demanding, with the heat adding an extra level of fatigue and concentration challenge across all rounds. However, all archers demonstrated determination and maturity well beyond expectations.

I am extremely proud of how they coped with the conditions and how positively they represented both themselves and the school throughout the competition. A fantastic set of results and a day to be very proud of—well done to everyone involved.

Athletics

The year 9&10 Tuesday 2 June Track meet fell victim to the weather, as lightning bolts beat the gun. Thursday 4 June year 7&8 Track & Field fell at the same hurdle, as Thor won the celestial hammer, roaring in triumph across thunderous leaden skies.

Cricket

U14A v Wimbledon College

As half term ended, the U14A were first back at the crease on the opening afternoon of the second innings. Claremont came within touching distance of a remarkable victory away at Wimbledon College, in a game they looked dead and buried in after just one batting over. Wimbledon were indebted to a striking innings from their captain, who single left handedly took the game away from the visitors. His five sixes saw him to 95, the small boundary adding to the scoreboard, only to hole out to a brilliant catch by Ollie B at square leg, the ball destined to clear the ropes and the three figure mark off the last ball of the innings. Ollie had earlier held a steepling catch, Claremont ahead at 47-3, before the wheels came off in the middle part of the Wimbledon innings, the final fourth wicket falling at 193, a daunting total.

Claremont got off to a calamitous start, out of the contest at 4-3 after the opening six balls. However, a mature and increasingly confident innings from Nathan (64), ably supported by Dylan P and Aneel and some ragged bowling, gave Claremont the faintest of hopes. Ultimately, the home total proved too high, but at 179-8 in reply, Claremont can be pleased with the run chase effort. A fun fixture, with Nathan adding to his runs with two wickets to claim PoM.

Tennis

U14A v Putney High School

A fantastic day of tennis, despite the challenging weather. Unfortunately the result went against us, but the girls fought for every point in sustained rallies against a quality opposition. Greta B, Genevive H, Elsa d’O and Lilly E-S represented the school with great determination.
