Sports round-up
·1 May 2026
We hope you all enjoyed the Bank holiday break and some precious family time, a three-day hiatus amidst the array of fixtures packed into the first half of term. U12 cricket took centre stage on Friday, with A & B matches for Boys and Girls against RGS surrey Hills. Athletics continues to illuminate the campus, with Track only meets for Y7&8 on Tuesday, and a full Track and Field meet on Thursday in this shortened week. Tennis served up some impressive performances, and our Archers and Fencers continue to prosper.

St George’s Day Shoot – Greenwood Osterley Archers (GOA) May 4th (be with you)
Greenwood Osterley Archers hosted their annual St George’s Day Shoot on 4 May, with competitors benefiting from near perfect shooting conditions throughout the day. Representing the school were Rosie and Isabelle, both competing in the Barebow category. Barebow archery demands a high level of technical proficiency, as archers shoot without the use of sights or stabilisation aids, relying entirely on precision, consistency, and disciplined form.
Rosie competed in the Windsor 50 round, which consists of three dozen arrows shot at 50 yards, followed by three dozen at 40 yards and three dozen at 30 yards. This round requires sustained concentration, stamina, and the ability to adapt across varying distances.
Isabelle took part in the Windsor 30 round, comprising three dozen arrows at 30 yards, followed by shorter distances of 20 and 10 yards. This format provides a structured progression of distances while still demanding accuracy and control.
Both archers performed exceptionally well, demonstrating consistency and composure across all distances. Their efforts were rewarded with gold medal finishes in their respective categories, an excellent achievement. A particular commendation goes to Isabelle, who not only secured first place but also achieved a new personal best score, reflecting her continued development and commitment to the sport. Overall, the event was well organised and provided a valuable competitive experience, with both archers representing the school with distinction.

“They’ve got four slips and a gulley”
1st XI v Salesian
A terrific game on the main square saw Claremont fall just ten runs short in a valiant run chase. Chasing a daunting 178 for victory, Claremont openers Will H (48) and late replacement Ally J (27) enjoyed an eighty-four run partnership, before Luca A (40) was joined by Max O (23), the sixth wicket pair narrowly missing out as the Salesian bowlers held their nerve. The 168-4 pursuit came after the Salesian opener scored a fine 58, partnerships of sixty-five and forty-one anchored by some destructive hitting. Wickets for Ash V, Marcus R and Amerleigh P, were scant reward for a decent fielding display. On a perfect summer afternoon, this was a thoroughly entertaining and competitive match, Will H nominated as MoM, an impressive contribution from Luca A pushing him close.
1st XI v St James’s
The 1st XI played against St James’s who batted first and scored a good 195/5. Claremont started well but lost wickets finishing on 125 all out. Good batting by Rohan B and Noah D
U15A v King Edwards, Witley
U15A had a good game against King Edward’s Witley who batted first and made 174/7. Claremont started chasing well and were up within the run rate but then had a mini collapse. They eventually managed to score 136 all out against some very strong bowling., despite a great batting performance from Charlie Mason scoring 45.
U15A v St George’s
Claremont were comprehensively outplayed by a strong St George’s team, who batted the visitors out of the game in reaching 190 – 2, two opposition batters reaching decent fifties. Claremont limped to 92-7 surviving the 20 overs, but not really able to worry the hosts throughout. Hugo showed some nice cover drives, Oscar I and Josh M probed and nurdled away, but the day well and truly belonged to St George’s.
U15A v King Edward’s, Witley
Claremont U15B succumbed to a relatively one-sided defeat against King Edward’s, unable to post a sufficiently challenging total. Played adjacent to the picturesque pond on West End green, Claremont batted first, but soon found themselves in deep water, losing early wickets and momentum, despite a promising innings from Callum (17). Wickets fell regularly, Charlie C alone in providing valuable support, but with the home side reaching just 94, the fielding would need to be both on and at point to restrict the visitors’ victory charge. A fine 82 run partnership put paid to any lingering hopes, Jake W, and a first ball wicket for Harry C the only reward. Harry S kept wicket really well, but for Claremont the main highlight was seeing seagulls swoop to scavenge the opposition sandwich box, crumbs of comfort on a fun if disappointing afternoon.
U13A v Wimbledon College
U13B played Wimbledon College away and batted first scoring 112/4 which seemed like a reasonable score but the opposition chased it down in a very exciting match especially in the last two overs and with four balls to go. Great bowling by Arthur B who took two wickets and was on a hat trick ball. Outstanding batting by Jimmy W scoring 25 not out including a six and two fours.
U13A v Shrewsbury House
U13A played Shrewsbury House in the County Cup who batted first and scored 189/1 with some amazing batting and some less fortunate fielding. Claremont tried to chase down the score and ended up on 83/8, with some resilient batting by Albie A who scored 30.
12A v RGS Surrey Hills
Surrey Hills arrived with a side learning to play so the expectation was they would struggle to make a game of it. How wrong they were. Claremont batted first and after 10 solid overs had amassed 60 without losing a wicket. Everything was going to plan. After retiring the two openers, it was now up to the middle order to push on to a formidable total. The batting from here on in was solid so we reached a competitive total of 139 if not a dominating one.
The Surrey Hills innings started quietly, but it was apparent, that even if their players lacked technique, some of them had ability. Scoring was consistent with some very strong hitting. However, with everyone in Claremont’s side getting a bowl, the consistency from everyone undoubtedly made the difference. Brodie and Harrison took some excellent catches with the shared amongst the bowlers. However the key spell was probably Brodie’s opening burst that put paid to two of Surrey’s better batters.
As the overs ticked down and wickets fell regularly, Claremont should have been comfortably on top, but suddenly Surrey began to strike boundaries. It came down to Harrison and Brodie to bowl the final two overs and close the game out successfully. Player of the game was undoubtedly George who was outstanding behind the stumps, making countless quality stops and even venturing up to the stumps to attempt standing up to the batter.
U12B v RGS Surrey Hills
What a great game of cricket. Claremont bowled first in beautiful sunshine, restricting the visitors to 109 in twenty mostly tight overs. The fielding was markedly improved, with two direct run outs, Daniel showing good awareness in recovering from a dropped catch to throw the wicket down. Ethan C (2-6 from 4 overs) and Nathaniel (1-5) were perhaps the pick of the bowlers, with debut keeper Jackson FO’B doing a great job behind the stumps. Batting with increasing awareness of the match position, Claremont ran intelligently, Ethan in particular pressurising the field with some well taken cheeky singles. RGS bowled effectively at the death however, Claremont with falling just short at 104 in a fun encounter. Player of the Match: Ethan C
U12B Girls v RGS Surrey Hills
U12B girls played a softball match against RGS Surrey Hills and managed to score 308/4. The opposition chased down the score in a tight game scoring 314/4. The girls fielded really well in the last 2 overs making it difficult for the opposition.
Emily T (Y7) had a great time at the British Youth Fencing Championship in Sheffield, in a tough U14 Girls Epee competition.

On Wednesday 6 May, Claremont took on Halliford in the ISGA tournament. It was a closely fought contest with a much fancied opposition. Tension was present in abundance. Ruairi Blayney led the way and got a point on the board before Josh Hall narrowly lost on his final hole, leaving things all square. With the first two matches seeing the scores level, the overall result came down to the final hole, and the final approach shots, where Giles Sanders was able to hold his nerve and close out the match for a well fought victory. Congratulations to all the boys who played, and we look forward to advancing to the next stage.

U14 v Reeds
Our U14 boys played Reed’s in their first Surrey League match. They faced a very tough challenge but gave their very best throughout, showing great determination while enjoying the experience. Well done to Giles S, Aneel K, Roshan P, and Dylan P for their effort and commitment.

U12 v Reeds
Our U12 boys faced a very tough match against Reed’s, but they gave their very best throughout and showed great spirit while enjoying their matches. Well done to all of the boys who took part and represented the team so positively. George S, Brodie J, Dylan K and Milo K.

U14 Girls v St Catherine’s
Our U14 girls took on St Catherine’s in the next round of the Sports School Magazine 2026 competition. It was a tough match, with every game exciting to watch. We won two of our singles matches and narrowly lost the other two, leaving the singles tied overall. The Claremont girls then worked incredibly hard in the doubles, winning both matches to secure a fantastic 4–2 victory in the end. The girls played brilliantly throughout — well done to Greta B, Genevieve H, Elsa O-B, and Lily E-S.

Senior Girls vs Ewell Castle for Surrey League
Our senior girls played their final match against Ewell Castle. Facing a strong tennis academy, the girls performed outstandingly and made Ewell Castle work hard for their victory. The final score was 3–1 to Ewell Castle. Well done to Anais P, Sofia C, Linea P, Isabella L, and Sophie W for a fantastic effort and great team spirit.

LTA League V CLFS
On Friday after school, the U13 girls’ and boys’ teams took on City of London Freemen’s School in the LTA League.
The U13 boys began their matches strongly, but unfortunately one of our players sustained an injury partway through. After the singles, we were 3–1 down. Going into the doubles, Charlie S showed incredible determination, playing on his own against Freemen’s number 1 and 2 players and winning convincingly 6–0. The second doubles match was closely contested, but we narrowly lost 4–2, making it a very tight afternoon overall. Well done to Charlie S, George S, Brodie J and Alex B for their efforts.
The girls also faced a tough challenge, drawing level with Freemen’s at 3–3 after some excellent matches featuring long and competitive rallies. This meant the result came down to a Championship Tie Break, where Greta and Lily delivered an outstanding performance, winning decisively 10–2. A fantastic result and a performance to be proud of. Well done to Greta B, Elsa O-B, Lily E-S and Ane B.
