Welcome back dear reader; the advent of half term races in from deep cover to short point as the fixture frenzy continues apace. Athletics, Cricket, Tennis and exciting news on the Rugby front form this week’s slip cordon, as we chase more success across the campus and beyond.  The capricious weather gods have challenged activity this week; Vivaldi himself could not have composed a more tempestuous concerto, rain, hail and brilliant sunshine passing the baton from azure sky to thunder cloud, players bathed in brightness on the bend, scurrying for cover down the home straight.

Athletics

This week saw Y9&10 enjoy a Track only meet on Tuesday. Hector F won the Y10 300m, Eloise P (Y10) and Lulu G (Y9) won their respective Girls’ 200m races. Freya M (Y10) and Ellie W (Y9) won their 100m, Ellie also first in the Y9 hurdles. A full Track and Field meet scheduled on Thursday for the Y7&8 squads saw the weather thunderclap its pernicious hands…..the meet sadly cancelled by the confused climatic conditions.

Cricket

New nets now adorn the practice area, smart Claremont livery accentuating our ever improving cricket provision.

U15A Girls v Ibstock Place

A superb all-round performance saw the team secure a well-deserved victory after restricting IPS to 97 before chasing the target down in style. The innings could not have started better in the field, with Lucia P taking an excellent catch behind off the bowling of Ella S in the very first over to remove the opener and give the side an early breakthrough. From there, disciplined bowling and sharp fielding ensured IPS were never able to build any meaningful partnerships or gain momentum.

One of the key moments of the innings came courtesy of Ella S, whose brilliant direct-hit run out removed IPS’s most dangerous-looking batter just as they were beginning to settle. Sophie K also played a major role in the fielding effort, claiming a 2 wickets for a mere 6 runs and taking a crucial catch to keep the pressure firmly on the opposition throughout. Thea H also took a pair of wickets. Emily bowled the ball of the day a quick Yorker that took out leg stump. Jess L bowled with control and continued to maintain the pressure on the batters. IPS eventually finished on 97, leaving a chase that still required focus and composure.

Ella S and Emily made sure there would be no nerves. The pair came out aggressively from the start and never allowed the bowlers to settle, playing positively and scoring freely all around the ground. Their excellent running between the wickets constantly pressured the fielders and kept the scoreboard moving at an impressive rate. A standout moment in the chase came when Ella S produced a devastating over containing two huge sixes and a four, swinging the match decisively in the team’s favour. Fittingly, Ella S finished the game in style with a superb boundary to seal an excellent victory. A fantastic team performance, full of energy, discipline, and attacking cricket from start to finish.

U15B v King Edwards, Witley

Fun with the foxes. Claremont U15B arrived with just nine players, but won a good natured game, scoring 115 –5 in their allotted overs, the visitors struggling to 65 all out in under fourteen overs. For Claremont , a fine fifty third wicket stand between captain Edward C and Elliot G led the way, with Charlie C and Eden M adding valuable runs.

King Edwards really faltered from the outset, despite the evident gaps in the field given the reduced number of fielders. Bowling straight proved sufficient, with Ed C bowling a tight line and Pom Elliot G adding to his 22 runs, with a run out and five wickets for 25 in an excellent all round performance. Rafferty G took 3-9 as Claremont wrapped up proceedings in double quick time, winning by 54 runs.

A fun fixture, enjoyed by all the players, was further enlivened by the arrival of two brazen foxes, whose attention to the match teas caused an unusual ‘paws in play’, before they, like the game opposition were sent home with tails between their legs.

U14A v St Johns

Claremont U14A fell to a narrow but somewhat tepid defeat away at St Johns. The game was delayed by the previous match on the same track, requiring a restriction to the overs. St Johns were put in to bat in the revised 16 over format, Claremont making initial inroads, as Nathan struck in the first over, and wickets fell with regularity. The game was ultimately taken away from the visitors by a fine 56 from John’s No.6 Felix, as the hosts were propelled from 74-5 to a respectable 115.

Claremont struggled to stay with the required run rate, with some accurate bowling and some superbly committed fielding muting the scoreboard. One goalkeeper’s top left dive on the long on boundary prevented a certain six, both Claremont openers holing out to the same player as the run charge stalled. The team eventually limped to 95 from their allotted overs, close enough on the scorecard, but in reality lacking the conviction that this was a home team there for the taking. Claremont dropped three catches, Johns held every one, Claremont hitters fell short of the ropes, Johns No.6 cleared them. Fine margins, but evidence enough that team and self belief and faith needs to arrive off the minibus.

Claremont U14A v Ibstock Place

Having been put into bat, Claremont started well with Zain scoring a quick 25 runs off 30 balls.  This was supported by a 74-run partnership between Hugo and Oscar which contributed to a competitive score of 149-5 off 20 overs.  Roshi opened the bowling and kept things very tight with Ibstock only scoring 3 runs off his first 3 overs.  However, with 87 not out from one of the classy Ibstock batsmen, Claremont suffered a defeat with just two overs to go.

U14A Girls v Tormead

What a dramatic game this was! Winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Claremont made a strong start, restricting Tormead through the first few overs before some exceptional batters took to the crease, steadily building the score. Despite losing wickets, Tormead set a challenging 162.

Mia and Alice built a strong partnership taking advantage of every ball to be well ahead of the run rate through 8 overs. Mia put together a well composed 50 and it suddenly looked to be an achievable chase. As wickets fell, Val & Mia were at the wicket for the final over. The score was tied with one ball to go when Mia was bowled (67). With the advent of a hugely tense super over, Claremont batted first scoring 4-1. Tormead required two off the last ball as Alice B launched a ball in from the covers for a run out and to win by one run. What a spectacular finale. The win was well deserved and has prepared us well for the second round.

U13A v Ibstock Place

Ibstock scored 102 in their twenty overs, steady bowling containing a limited batting side. A slow start from Claremont in reply, saw Jimmy W and James P build a lead, kick started by Ethan S, with Eddie H closing out a routine run chase to earn Claremont the spoils.

U13B v Ibstock Place

What a fantastic performance by U13B team playing against Ibstock Place. They posted 186/2 with a good solid opening partnership that scored 51 in 6 overs for the first wicket. Claremont bowled really well and held the opposition after three overs to 10 for 3 wickets. Eventually the game ended at 106/8 with Charlie N taking 3 wickets and an outstanding performance by Fergus M scoring 51 not out including three sixes and five fours.

U12A v Ibstock Place

The 2019 cricket World Cup final may have gone down as one of the greatest games in cricket history – but the Claremont U12A vs Ibstock Place surely tops it.

It was a wonderful sunny morning on the Claremont Triangle, with some new faces making debuts for the team. Just like the A3 this morning, the pitch was unpredictable, making it difficult for the batsmen. As our openers fell, it was up to Tharuk and Harrison to form a solid partnership, with scores of 16 and 31 respectively. Olly M came in with a crucial 15 runs to bring our total score to a light but defendable 124.

Ibstock came out with some aggressive batting, but some excellent bowling from our openers Brodie and Harrison put the pressure back on Ibstock. Unfortunately, the top scorer today was in fact Extras, keeping their run rate high. But we also knew the game would fundamentally come down to our fielding. Keeper George S, despite facing a knock, had a fantastic game behind the stumps, and Daniel and Ethan put in brilliant athletic performances in the field. But our great fielding was no better exemplified than Olly M’s two direct hit run outs.

With three overs remaining, Ibstock needed 12 to win but were 7 wickets down. In a high pressure situation, Tharuk and Brodie stepped up with two crucial overs. It was up to Harrison in the final over, as the batting team needed 6 with 2 wickets remaining. A boundary and a wicket followed and Claremont needed to defend 2 from the final ball to win. Harrison’s final ball crashed into the batsmen’s pads, narrowly missing LBW and they ran a single to tie the match. Overall a brilliant game and team performance. Olly M for his batting and fielding won MOTM.

U12A v Thomas’s College

On a sunny afternoon Claremont took on Thomas’ on the Fan Court Triangle. We went out to bat first, and after a few early wickets the game hung in the balance. But a solid partnership from Max P and Harrison kept the game in our favour, with free flowing boundaries. Olly M and Finn J helped to chip in with runs as we finished with an impressive score of 150 all out. As Thomas’ came out to bat they were not expecting a masterclass of pace bowling from Brodie and Harrison as quick wickets fell. Undoubtedly the highlight of the game was the team hat-trick as Harrison bowled two batsmen, and a brilliant run out secured a special moment for the team. Finn J also had a great day with the ball taking 2 wickets for 6 runs. As the opposition knew that the game was running away from them (as well as their team bus) they were forced to declare early ending their innings with 88-8, as Claremont won by 62 runs and Harrison MOTM.

U12B v Thomas’s College

Claremont batted in a friendly game where Thomas College found it difficult to bowl on the wicket and our boys ended on 108/2. After some good bowling from us we restricted the opposition to 94/8, with some outstanding bowling by Daniel H: 3 overs 3 wickets for 6 runs.

Tennis

Surrey Festival

A great two days of tennis at St George’s, who hosted the Surrey Festival.

The girls started the festival on 30 April, with the Senior Girls enjoying the opportunity to play on the grass courts. They competed in a series of challenging matches and worked incredibly hard throughout the day. Well done to Sofia C and Sophie W.

Our U16 pair had an outstanding day, narrowly missing out on the top spot in their group after losing a tie-break to Guildford High, which determined who would progress to the semi-finals. An excellent performance from Anais P and Poppy M.

Our U12 Tier 2 pair also had a fantastic tournament, winning their group stages with some excellent tennis. They then progressed to play Amesbury in the semi-finals, where they fought hard but were unfortunately defeated. A brilliant effort from Lily ES and Rosie T.

This was the first time we entered the U12 Tier 1 competition, and the girls were exceptional throughout the day. They battled hard in every single match, recording fantastic wins against Tormead and Wimbledon High before narrowly losing to Surbiton. This left the girls tied in second place with Surbiton, and after countback results were applied, Surbiton progressed through to the next round. Although disappointing for the girls to miss out so narrowly, we could not be prouder of their determination, teamwork, and attitude throughout the competition. Well done to Greta B and Elsa OB on an outstanding performance.

We continued the Surrey Festival the following day with the boys’ competition. It was a challenging day for all of our pairs, but the boys showed excellent determination and resilience throughout.

Our U12 pair had a strong tournament, winning two of their matches and only losing to the team that went on to top the group. Every match was closely contested, which saw them finish in second place in their group stages. Well done to George S and Dylan K.

The U14 boys faced a very tough group but gained valuable experience and worked hard in every match. Well done to Alex B and Albie A for their effort and commitment throughout the day.

Our U16 boys competed in an extremely evenly matched group. Every match they played was very close. After winning their opening match convincingly, both their second and third matches went to tie-breaks. The boys fought hard throughout and, although the results did not quite go their way, they produced an outstanding performance against strong opposition. A huge well done to Leo B and Charlie S for representing the school so brilliantly.

The girls played brilliantly and fought hard for every single point, never giving up until the very end. The match finished 3–3, taking the teams into a Championship tie-break. Despite a strong effort, the girls narrowly lost 10–6. An outstanding performance from Jessica L, Alice B, Sophie H and Kareena D. The girls should be incredibly proud of their effort, teamwork and resilience.

U15 Surrey League

The U15 girls played all of their Surrey League matches on Thursday due to the exam schedule. It was a lovely day of tennis against very strong opposition from Putney, Wimbledon and Surbiton.

Unfortunately, the results did not quite go our way and the girls finished fourth in the Surrey League group. Despite this, the team played with great determination throughout the day, never giving up and always keeping their heads held high.

The girls worked incredibly hard in every match and should be very proud of their effort, resilience and teamwork against such tough competition. Well done to Jessica L, Sophie H, Kareena D and Holly F for representing the school so positively.
